The brown anemones you have are aiptasia, not something you want in your tank if your going to have corals, the red stuff in your tank is red slime ( a bacteria) usually an indicator that your tanks water conditions are not good or incorrect lighting. Looks like your filtration systems is an outside filter which I dont think is going to be adequate for your system , so would suggest more liverock, and get a protein skimmer. I would buy a test kit, API is cheap and would give you a start so you would know what your water conditions are. I also would not add any more fish till you get your water parameters , nitrate, nitrite, an ammonia correct. Once you get these taken care of then you might think about added some easy corals but I would not get in a big hurry to add coral till you get your tank running nice.

What are maxi-jets? the sound like a current-creator? just guessing. ill have to look them up

Should i keep the Aiptasia in my tank until i decide to start coral? Or get rid of them immediatly? And to get rid if them is there a special method? I've heard squirting them with calcium does the trick, but i've learned not depend on info from just a single source.

Red slime sounds bad. Is it? It was growing on the live rock when i got it. now its spread a little bit. If its something i need to get rid of? is there a good method to that as well?

I have an outside filtration system. Do i need to upgrade? If so, any suggestions on brand/model/size? There has also been talk about sumps, and im not sure what those are. I'll research them but its nice to get multiple explainations to understand better.

As far as lighting goes, can u buy a bulb for growing coral and use it to replace my fish-only one? or do i have to bey external lights?

Do fish, inverts and plants do fine with the lights that coral need? or do i have to have both a coral light and a fish light?

Once again, im researching everything thats being said here, its jsut nice to keep talking about it so i have lots of ideas and have a better understanding of what im going to need to do in the future.

Thanks you so much guys i really appreciate you sharing your knowledge!

as far as the aptasia goes, when you start getting your clean up crew, crabs snails and such, get a couple pepermint shrimp, they love to eat them.

red algae, you may need to take the rocks out and put them in a rubbermaid tub with saltwater and scrub them down real good with a toothbrush. do not put that water into your tank.

filtration. i also use a hang on back filter for my 55 gal, as well as a hang on back skimmer. your live rock and skimmer will do most of your flitering but you need to make sure you have enough rock, about 1-1.5lbs per gallon of water.

fish do not need any lights at all, so whatever lights you get for your coral should work fine.

What kind of skimmer do you use? I do my business with Pets Playhouse and im sure they will hook me up but i was just wondering if there are different types. someone told me that a protien skimmer i saw at petsmart didnt work with coral. but they didnt say why. made me wonder what types there were.

i have a reef octopus HoB skimmer, once you get it dialed in, it works wonders.

i think the best advice i have gotten so far since i started this hobby, about 2 months now. only bad things happen fast. so take your time, patience is truely one of the hardest things to master.

yah but still only 2 weeks into your cycle the gramma wouldn't stand up as well. as far as lighting with you just using your normal flourescent lighting that came with the tank i will say you will be hard pressed to grow very many soft coral. i ran that on my 55 when i first started and had a hard time with mushrooms even and they are a very forgiving coral, i would suggest doing T5 lighting from the get go, that will allow you to do all softies now and LPS later with some SPS. when you get more into it then you can go to more T5's or halides and a bigger tank. as far as a skimmer goes for yours. whoever told you a certain skimmer wouldn't work for coral is stupid. because a FO tank dont need a skimmer anyways as long as you have a good filter and do water changes, i ran my first 55g with no skimmer and barely did water changes, just used some random filters from walmart and never lost a fish. its the coral that need skimmer as they dont like the nutrients i the water that the skimmers remove.

check this out for a light for your tank, I'm assuming its 30"

    and this for a skimmer

now you can prolly find them cheaper elsewhere but kinda gives you an idea what to look for

hmm i dont see what the difference in those is. other than yours is prolly alot bigger. something to think about though.

Would a wavemaker be good for my tank? are they just for coral or do fish enjoy them too?

power heads produce current, coral need them, some more then others, i know my little firefin loves to hang out in the water column and nab food out of it.
