my lfs store up here had a flame scallop for sale and I decided to bring it home to see if I could keep it alive. Its not lookin so hot right at the moment but I noticed something strange. It appears to have a small and very pale crab living in the back of its shell. Is this something normal or has anyone heard of this before? I cant find my camera at the moment but ill try to get some pics with my phone and post em up in a bit. The scallop is maybe 1 1/2" long by 1" wide and this crab is maybe dime sized. I havent actually seen the crab move yet but I thought this is weird. any thoughts?

That's a commensal crab. It shouldn't hurt the clam. These clams (I believe) are strictly filter feeders so you would probably need to feed them greenwater to keep them alive. I've seen them on some of my dives, about 60 feet down, burrowed into rock walls. They are neat but quite a bit more of a challenge to keep alive than your standard giant clams.
