I bought carribean live sand and put it in my tank thursday. It was very cloudy and took the weekend to clear. Came home tonight and it was semi clear until I moved some rocks. Will this ever clear up? Very disappointed I was recommended this product from a local fish store as I've never had this issue with sand. It was powdery and not moist like I thought live sand should be. Is this normal? How long will it take to clear? And will it be cloudy every time I move somethig?

I probably have the same sand. It clouded up very easily for the first few months. It also took a long time to settle back down.
In time it got much better, but very frustrating for the first few weeks/months.

I trusted the guy at the lfs. May not go back because of this issue. I won't name the place.

If it was dry I don't it was true live sand. All the bags of live sand I have ever seen where wet.

Are you running filter socks? Regardless if you run them all the time or not...if you run 1 or 2 while the tank is cloudy it should help clear it in 24-48 hrs in my experience.

Yes I'm running socks. It takes 24 hours to clear but settles on my live rock . I've never had an issue like sand. The last 2 plus have been bare bottom.

Do you have a pic of the bag? As @FishBrain@FishBrain said...if it wasn't wet/damp it was not live sand. That being said I have never added dry sand to a tank that I did not throughly rinse until it "rinsed clear" before adding to my tank due to reasons like this.

I guess not dry just a little moist. But so much dust. It says live sand.

Are the socks pulling it out? You should have the dust slime up the sock. If not buy some felt from fabric store and line the socks.

But I second the rinse thoroughly. I use a stainless steel window screen over a tub so the finer sand can be salvaged. You can do the same with a bucket and is required for finer sand. Put 2-3 inch of sand in bucket, add water and mix it all. The -100 (dust) suspends in the water that you dump out slow enough that the sand doesn't wash out. This method is slower but works. I personally think the live sand is not worth the upcharge

It was half way clear today and I stirred it up again. It pretty much goes straight through the sock but the skimmer is working great. Im thinking about putting a second skimmer in. It's gonna be a l on wait. I seriously thought about going bare bottom like my 125 but it hard to keep it clean. My 125 bottom is loaded and covered with zoas. I might keep 2 systems running as a back up as I don't trust this sand.

I have had a similar issue with a particular brand of live sand. I just kept filtering and it eventually cleaned up. I went as far as to also stick some filter floss inside a fish net and place that in front of a powerhead. i would rinse that out a couple of times a day for a week or so. Eventually it settled, though it left a sludge on a lot of the tank. I don't have any problems with stirring it up now.

I use Special Grade Reef Sand most of the time and always put about a 1 gallon bucket's worth in a 5g bucket then fill with a hose sprayer churning it up good and dump the water, repeat 2-3 times and then dump the sand and repeat. I don't know about others but I think that "live sand" is kind of "meh"...does it really make a difference in the short run?
