So, I am thinking that I would like to try dosing with Kalkwasser, instead of my 2-part.  I was wondering is someone using Kalkwasser in the Des Moines area would be willing to sell me a cup or two ??? so that I could try it before purchasing a half gallon from BRS.

You can just pick up some Mrs. Wage's Pickling Lime from the grocery store. It's only a buck or two and it's the same stuff.

I've Mrs Wages for years. Works great, same as BRS. Walmart sells it also in the canning section.

I read about using pickling lime.  I didn't think the grocery store would have it at this time of year.  I'll check it out.  Thanks!

Thanks guys.  I didn't find it at Hyvee, but did find it at Fareway.  I wouldn't even have thought to look there, as I don't frequent that grocery store, but it was close to where I was going today so I checked.
Sone - thanks for offering some in case I didn't find any.
So I'll be trying this out the next couple of days.  I'm anxious to see the results!  Plus it will be another simplification to my maintenance chores not to have to add the two part each day!

I am sure you know this, but be careful. Kalk has a pH of 12 and has to be added very slowly like the alkalinity part of two part.

Not trying to hijack this post or go off topic, as I'm sure you would really like to hear everyone's opinions on this, but how does everyone dose their pickling lime? I've heard of people just shaking it up with some water and dosing it straight at night, but I've also heard this was not good to do.

I have a 125 gallon tank (29 gallon sump)with not too many corals using up the calcium, so I shake up a tsp of it in a jar and pour it in the return pump right before I go to bed and again when I wake up(when I remember). The lights are out for both "doses," so it helps maintain ph, but I don't think this would cause much of a spike at all.

Anyone's input to help Becker and the rest of us would be nice.

To add to Joel's post about the kalk being a ph of 12, how much kalk/water creates a ph of 12? I there some formula to find this? I've always known about it having a ph of 12, but I have no idea if that's 1 tsp:1 gallon or 1tsp:20 gallons.

I mix mine in a 5gal bucket around 8tsp for 4 gal let it settle for a few hours and pour the clear liquid into another bucket. Then I drip mine in 24/7 arouund a 1 1/2 gal a day. But I'm about to just start doseing via ATO.

Thanks for all the input.  Great info.
Right now, I'm planning to mix the kalkwasser in a 5 gal bucket, letting it settle - ?? maybe overnight ??? and then adding it to my ATO resevoir (avoiding anything that might have settled at night).  That should last me for about 4 days.  Based on my current consumption of 2-part, I am estimating that I will need 2 1/2  to 3 tsp of the pickling lime for 5 gallon water.
I've also seen the literature of a PH of 12, but didn't know if that was always, or based on adding 2 tsp of lime per gallon.  Anyone know????
One of the reasons I am planning to try the kalkwasser is that PH is constantly low (around 8.0 if I don't add a PH buffer), and I want to see if the kalkwasser will bring it up to more around 8.2 or 8.3 and keep it there.  I know that 8.0 should be ok, but I've also read that SPS corals have better growth with a PH of @8.2.  And since the few SPS I have, seem to have zero growth, I thought I'd like to see the effect of raising the PH a bit on a more consistant basis.
And now the last question.  How slow is slow?  My tank is 75g with a 20g sump.  I've got the ATO unit from Autotopoff.  I think I read that its sensitivity was 1/8".  So after doing the math, (I'm using the aqualifter rated at 3gal/hour), I think my ATO runs on average 7 times a day for 4 minutes each time, delivering 3 cups of water.  Slow enough????  I've also read about adding a valve to the end of the airline tubing so that you slow the water to a drip instead of a slow stream.  I'm thinking I don't need to go that far. ?????
I also realize that I have the siphon problem with the ATO unit and the aqualifter.  The water level in my resevoir starts out higher than the water level on my sump.  So I have to resolve that first.  I tried making a hole in the tubing, but that wasn't very succesful.  So, now I'm going to try raising the height of the tubing going into the sump, and placing the tubing in either a PVC pipe or a 1/2" flexible tubing.  How have you guys solved that problem??
Thanks everyone for a great discussion!!!

I also use kalkwassar in my autotopoff in my 210gallon. I have a 20 gallon reservoir I fill weekly with kalk and use about 17 gallons per week. PH is always 8.2 - 8.3. My reservoir is in the stand with my sump so they sit side-by-side.

A word of caution on the aqualifter in that they tend to foul and fail if not cleaned regularly (at least monthly) - at least when I had one on the syphon on an overflow of my old tank I had sporadic issues if I got lax on my maintenance. I suspect kalk will hasten any fouling associated with that issue. For that reason, I went with a small powerhead on my topoff so it is easier to clean and seems to be far less prone to fouling...
