    December 17, Jake Adams

The Jebao/Jecod ‘Cross-Flow’ Wave Pump’ has appeared, verifying the rumors that Jebao had already developed a knock-off of the MaxSpect Gyre pump. Jebao’s Cross-Flow Wave Pump will be available in two sizes, the Jecod CP-45 with 45 watts of power and hte Jecod CP-25 with 25 watts of power.

The new Jecod Cross-Flow seems to go toe-to-toe for every feature of the MaxSpect Gyre pump and the only thing that maker Jebao didn’t outright rip-off was the Gyre name. As you might expect, since Jebao didn’t have to amortize any Research and Development, patent or trademark costs, the Jecod Cross-Flow pump’s only ‘improvement’ will be a low balled price compared to the Gyre pump.

The first retailer to offer the Jecod Cross-Flow Wave Pump is Reef Green Tech from France, and since they also carry MaxSpect products we can see a direct comparison of pricing in Euros. While the MaxSpect XF-150 retails for 309€ and the XF-130 sells for 259€, the price of the Jecod CP-45 is a staggerlingly low €109 – nearly half the price of the XF-130 and almost a third the cost of the XF-150! [Ed. Note. Reef Green Tech has since taken down their listing of the Jecod pump due to possible penalties of selling an IP-infringing product]

Sure it’s nice to have effective aquarium devices costing less due to competition, but Jebao is not competing, they are practicing wonton disregard for intellectual property, and the theft of the hard work and innovation that MaxSpect put into the original Gyre pump. If you think you’ll be getting a deal with a cut-throat priced Jecod Cross Flow Wave Pump, you can be guaranteed that Jebao cut every corner to make the Jecod Cross Flow as cheap as possible.

The cross flow probably uses as little material in its rotors as possible, the cheapest possible bearing material, the least amount of epoxy to seal the copper wires of the motor etc. And who you going to call when the Jecod Cross-Flow breaks down, or worse, has a breach of the motor potting which leeches copper into your reef aquarium?

Thankfully for MaxSpect, they did their due diligence in applying for all manner of international patents and trademarks, knowing full well that unscrupulous companies like Jebao would never respect it. Needless to say, MaxSpect is probably all lawyered up and they aren’t going wait nearly as long as Hydor to do something about this infraction by Jebao.

We’ve reached out to Maxspect and received this official statement about the whole situation:

It is an understatement to say that every industry in the world is having their share of problems with it comes to Intellectual Property infringement, and it just appears that our industry is not immune to this problem either. In fact as we can see the issue intensify rapidly in recent years, and unfortunately for us, it seems that we are also falling victim to having our Intellectual Property infringed by another company recently.

To combat Intellectual Property infringement activities, Maxspect will not hesitate and take all necessary steps to properly protect our US and international PCT patented technology. We have already initiated the corresponding legal activities and would make an official announcement very soon regarding this matter.

For years Maxspect had been focusing on researching and developing some of the most innovating technologies and award-winning products, and they were very well received by both our industry and consumers. In the future, Maxspect will continue to innovate and bring even more interesting and revolutionary products to the market.

This doesn't surprise me in the least, it was just a matter of time. The only people that end up winning in these battles are the lawyers. Tunze threw a fit when the WP series came out, I hadn't heard that Hydor did anything. All I gotta say is good luck. I'm waiting for my scrubbers to be copied, with my next version I give it 18 months.

The concept of the gyre is not new. Has been in furnaces and corn cribs for years to move air. Honestly surprised someone didn't come out with a similar design sooner.

Tunze definitely stole the product design but not the concept. Poor creativity on their part

The materials used probably arent all that different or shoddy. Jebaos biggest cost savings is in research and development. The reason they can offer it so cheap is primarily because they only invest a fraction of what the original manufacturer did. So quality of materials isnt that big of a difference typically. That being said, if Jebao copied the initial release version of the Gyre it is going to be horrible. Maxspect had enough of their own issues with the quality and design. Trying to return or repair this will also be worse probably. Maxspect is also a Chinese manufacturer so at least for once they are ripping off people in their own neighborhood. That being said. I might get the smaller version to compliment my 150 Gyre. I like Jebao in that they are cheap and Ive found reliable enough to risk. My wallet has no morals.

Most people don't agree with them stealing other company's product designs. But to be honest most of us will still use the pumps for the simple fact that they're so cheap.

I would be nervous about the quality since the gyre is more delicate than the normal bladed powerheads they offer.

I am interested since maxspect is Chinese if the Chinese govt will take action against the ripoff. Often times the Chinese govt prefers to have Chinese made products even if they are rip offs and won't take action, but if it's a Chinese company they might be a bit more strict. No, there are not IP laws really in China, but the govt has total control and they generally act they can protect their own even from another Chinese company if they think it will hurt the overall market.

I guess imo who cares none of us work for coralvue... nobody complains about new frag racks when they all look similar. As for the lawsuit I dont think that went to far with the wps they still have them and still sell them... i have 3 gyre 150s and jebao pumps.

With my 220 I have 1 gyre and 1 wp25. I had to add the wp25 because of the dead spot the gyre has... there is not as much flow in the middle of the tank as I would have liked so I took care of it with a wp25.

Heres a pic of how the flow looked with the gyre

    20150816_194226_001-01-1.jpg

So I put the wp25 on the side with the gyre and aimed it straight in the middle towards the far side.

But like I said being a consumer none of us should really get butthurt over someone elses problem cause it really has nothing to do with us. Both jebao and maxpect have great customer service. When I had a problem with the gyre coralvue sent me a new one... when I had an issue with my wp40 fishstreet sent me a new one for free.

So it really comes down to what you can afford

It's the ethics of it. If you have a brilliant idea, it is good to have the security that you can capitalize on it for a time until the patent has expired. At that point any company can use the idea..

A centrafugal pump is nothing new. But that pump jebao made IS the same design as maxspect. They could have at least used the centrafugal pump in a different design/layout.

I value my time and would be upset if I invested time and money to fine tune a product such as @Turbo's Aquatics@Turbo's Aquatics algae scrubbers, and they buy one, reverse engineer it and toss it to market before you can get your marketing pushed to the mass market.. So there is skin in the game. Those patents allow the first creator to recoupe that skin they put on the line.

    I understand that part.

But in the end it doesn't effect us the consumer in a negative way it actually helps by offering a similar pump at a cheaper price.

In any business you have to stay competitive because someone out there will make something similar like 302 aquatics for scrubbers which 302 scrubbers look like crap compared to Buds algae scrubbers and Im sure dont work nearly as well

Its all about the customer support and quality of the product. Jebao ime has been just fine it took longer then coralvue but in the end they came through the same

You say it doesnt affect us until companies like coralvue stops inventing new products, or worst yet goes bankrupt because of it.

Of course there are many people who dont care because they care about one thing, money in their pocket, and buying something cheaper.

    I care

So when the small jewelry store gets robbed, and they are selling stolen jewelry on the corner for .10 on the $, who cares right since none of us work at the little jewelry store?
