I have two Flames, one male one female. I bought them at different times, both females and then one changed into a very handsom male. I have been trying to add a Labouti but they were coming sick, and weak and one was even DOA. Thursday I tried again. This time a got a healthy one, nice sized and swimming openly and eating right from the start. Then the problem started, the male Flame started chasing and battering the Labouti. The Labouti evaded him and still swam openly. Soon the female Flame started working with the male Flame each taking half of the 120 searching for the Labouti who was now trying to hide. They would scout him out, chase him down and batter him, leaving the Labouti cowering in a corner. I could not catch the Flames but I did manage to get the Labouti in an acclamation box. Then I decided to turn the box on its side leaving an opening for the Labouti to go in and out but he got out and was in hiding again. I left the box there and later I noticed the Female Flame in it. I quickly slammed it against the glass closing the opening and now she is trapped. She is fine and I can feed her and she has some room to swim but she does not like it. What is really interesting is the male Flame is concerned for her. He swims gently up to the box checking on her. When the Labouti was in it he rammed the box. This morning when I got up it was dark out and the male Flame was swimming under the box in the dark as if to keep her company. Fish really are amazing. I am going to keep the female in there for maybe a week if she is doing well. Giving the Labouti a chance to eat and hopefully turn into a welcome member of the aquarium. At the very least this has cut down on the tag team hunting and battering of the Labouti and hopefully when she is free again the Flames will be so happy to be together they will not focus on the Labouti. One can only hope, we will see.

Sounds like a very good plan to me. Hopefully the labouts settles in after a couple days.
Maybe even leave lights out for a day when you turn flame loose. I have done that and it eased agression when I add new fish with my xmas wrasse. He is an ******* and don't like new tank mates.

That is a pretty awesome write up.

I am surprised they were that territorial.

Love labouti's, but yes they ship horrible. Good luck with this one.
