I'm kicking around the idea of a DIY LED build. I plan on going with the MakersLED drivers and controller. Roughly 20-24 LEDs per fixture. I can make them independent, but would like one of the drivers to have only the red and/or other colors on it. So they would have a wire going from one to the other, why not tie them together.

I was going to use the Makers heatsink, but saw this stuff and thought "What the heck." This is made from scrap aluminum we had in the discard bin at work, so I'm not out anything from trying. I've seen LEDs mounted to aluminum U channel, so thought this may be viable.

The flat sliding panel piece in the middle of the above pics, I have access to 4 of those. I moved them around for the next couple of pics.

I have more rail pieces that I can cut to span the long rails to hold a fan. One for each. The sliding flat pieces on the rails can hold the drivers. What do you think?

    Should mention dimensions for scale...

I made it with tube aluminum, 1.5"x3/4"x15". The tube aluminum "fixtures" are each 15" long. The whole thing itself is 36" long, so the gap between the two is 6" and would straddle the center brace. I have a standard 90 gallon tank.

Can't beat free, and should be more than adequate for the LEDs you are planning.

I had planned on using a combination of thermal adhesive and bolts to tie theses together. Would you guys recommend leaving a gap between the tubes for air flow or would you keep them together?

The cross pieces are a bit longer, so I can separate them if needed. I currently have them together because I've read that clustering them in groups if recommended to help prevent banding.

Banding. The disco effect you get when colors don't blend as well.

Yes in our DIY LED meeting this year Andy from Makers talked about this. He said yes keeping them in close cluster is best.
As far as separating the alm tube you don't have too. You also may not need fans. They really don't get hot or worm on my fixture.
