I have 2 - 36" Coralife Power Compact fixtures that have blubs a little over a year old so I either need to replace them or find a new light source.  Thought about LEDs but my tank is a 135 with a possible upgrade to a 210.
My PCs probably aren't the best for corals and I haven't really liked the look of corals under MH but then again I haven't sat and starred look enough to gain a true feeling.
I am also not liking the cost of replacing blubs every 8 months so LEDs is looking to be the best option for the wallet.
With that in mind I am also open to other ideas and offers if anyone has anything taking up space and is willing to part with it.  I don't have much $$$ nor things to trade but I know I could come up with something.
Side note.... if I was to go with LEDs anyone know of a site I could do research on to see what LED lighting I'd need for a 210 Tall (72"L X 24"D X 29"T)?  I'd love AI SOLs I'd need 3 on my DT, and 2 for my 40 Breeder but I dont have like $2500 to spend right now or I'd be at ACC instead of posting on here.

I have Apollo Reef dimmable LED on my 60 gallon. My tank is 3' long by 2' wide. One Apollo Reef covers the square footage with light to spare. I have it running at 65% right now and visually speaking, it seems like plenty of light. I am going to try to borrow a par meter this week to test out but reports on-line are looking good to support SPS growth. You do need an Apex controller though for these to work. With your tank, I bet you would be good with 2. They have a mix of blue/white with 3 purple led per fixture. you can even program your apex to mimic a 'storm' with cloud coverage, etc...no lightening which is bad anyway....but just enough variation in the day to day lighting to mix things up on ocassion.

was trying to find specs on line but havent seen much. My issue with them being 3 foot is the bracing in the middle of the tank. The tank has 2 center braces so it is split into 3rds. I have an issue with shadowing already so I'd continue with that problem if they are 3 foot long. But they look pretty cool. Sucks you need an Apex. I am getting the Reef Angel in a couple months.

IMO shadowing adds depth to your tank. There will be enough light even in the shadows for many type of coral. Things like chalices and favias do very well in the shadows.

hmm wish these guys were cheaper but I understand that I wont need to replace them in 10+ yrs. Any way to knock the price down? I am limited on what I can spend right now with the Wedding bills piling up on me.

So I am on the fence between two different LED sets

The Evo 150 Manually Dimmable lights or the Apollo Reef which I can hook to a controller

I can get 2 of the Evo 150s that are 36" each and would be enough for my 135 and still enough for a 210 if I ever get one for $800.

    Or

I could get 3 of the Apollo Reef sets that are only 16" long and they recommend 1 for ever 2 foot of tank so I'd need the 3 on my tank for $1300 plus the cost of a Reef Angel or Apex.

Cost wise I am liking the Evos. I could get a 3rd to put over my mangrove / frag tank and still be under the cost of the Apollos.

The reason why I post all of this is I rather have the better light for my buck. So I know a few members are using LEDs, in your opinion which is my better option?

I was thinking that as well. I do have a canopy right now and when I finally decide on my upgrade or not. Correction when my fiancee finally decides I plan to build a new tank stand that goes floor to ceiling so I have room for lighting above the tank.

$770 for just the 2 kits. What size heat sinks would I need? Each heat sink would have 32 LEDs on it if I get 2 kits. I like the idea of bringing the cost down, the nest issue I have w/ DIY is well its DIY and I do like to build my own stuff I also like warranties when something goes wrong. Maybe I am just paranoid but hey I don't want to be out a $1000 if I screw things up.

If you don't get a chance to call me stevesleds.com has great retro fit kits for cheap and great customer service that's what I have. It also comes pre assembled for the most part it's easy to assemble the rest. All you would need to buy is the controller interface go run it with your controller.
