Usually in this hobby you get what you pay for. That doesn't mean you can't get good deals but you have to be very careful. In the case of this particular brand historically the above rule is true. Their bulbs have been junk and past models have literally caught fire on several occasions. Doesn't mean they aren't better quality these days, but still follow the rule in general. I have owned one but for a VERY short time.

Like Joel, I've not heard anything good about the brand. That being said, maybe they have improved. Keep in mind that recent reviews are just that...recent. They are not from owners who have had the fixtures for 1 year+ that can give good reliability info on the fixtures. I would proceed very cautiously with looking into fixtures from them.

I had one several years ago and the ballast started on fire......I happened to be home and was able to stop things before our house burned down. Even if they've improved, I will never go near another Odyssea light again because of that experience with them. Spend a few more bucks and get something with a flawless track record.

I am not sure how they are selling these lights if they are so unsafe. I am going to try one out and see how it goes. I will be careful and watch it like a hawk.

    Thanks everyone.

    hey kyle,
i have been doing a lot of research on these lights and from what i can tell they have made some improvements.  the reason that the ballast caught on fire was because they where using magnetic drivers.  they have now changed to electronic drivers which has resolved the problem. (they still run rather hot, but no reported fires)  The ballasts are somewhat underpowered but can be fixed with a simple mod or you can replace it with phoenix ballast.
i would also replace the mh bulbs with phoenix brand ASAP....
other than these two problems i would say it sounds like a good light.
i will be ordering the  [class="productnamecolorLARGE colors_productname"]48" 716W Metal Halide System Advance Plus[/class] this month... and i will be posting about its performance
    good luck

Patrick thanks for the heads up. I too have read about the same things. I figured I could upgrade some things if they don't work out. I ordered a 24" for my 29gal, but didn't realize they have a 30" 4xt5 with moon light led. bulbs included and I can alway get better bulbs.
Anyway here is the one I am getting. http://www.ebay.com/itm/30-Aquarium-T5-HO-Light-96W-LED-Reef-Fish-Odyssea-CE-/380374525089?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item589016a4a1

    Thanks again
