so, with all the new led/ low temp/ low profile fixtures, I am seriously considering sticking an actinic strip of LEDs at the bottom of the tank pointed through the acrylic.   Has anyone seen anything like this in real life?

no i havent. could be interesting. try it and post pics. only draw back would be that algae would soon cover it blocking the light unless your tank floor is spottless :)

That could be cool, but would the light reflect outside of the acrylic or just light up the acrylic? It would seem to me that the acrylic would contain the light rather than allowing it to be reflected into the tank. Sounds like time to try a few experiments...let us know what you find out.

err. correction. I want the bottom of one of the sides...

as it is, most acrylic tanks have the light going through a piece (on top) I am not too worried about light loss

matt, ive tried this before with a glass tank and it did work. the only drawback was what snowman said, i had to clean the glass in front of the light every 2-3 days, became more a pain then it was worth. but it may work better on acrylic. not sure if they provide any uv blockers in the side panes. but hell its worth a shot.
