I'm not too good with the whole lighting lingo but I have a hood/fixture with 3 175W MH and 2 CF running the whole length, guessing around 5-6 feet.  I got home from work yesterday and the CF are out, MH are working just fine thank god. So, I'm highly doubting that the compacts both burnt out at the same time.  Would the problem be my ballast? Or the fixture?  And how would I find out?

I think the easiest way is to try out another bulb. Do you have any "old" ones? I am sure there are some voltmeters or something you could more properly diagnose the issue with, but I know little more in that field. Perhaps someone else will chime in too.

+1 on testing with a old bulb. I would think most likely that if both bulbs aren't working and they are ran off of the same ballist then the ballist is fried.
