Hey, just curious here....has anyone ever kept blue mussels in their sump as a toxin remover? I have read a couple of scientific journals published by the Journal of Marine biology... suggesting that these guys would be good at removing toxins from the water column. Curious if anyone uses these in their tank? They referenced the blue mussels which you can purchase from the grocery store, the species: Mytilus edulis.

I went ahead and picked one up, as I was already getting some Tilapia for the tank. I have it in QT and did a freshwater dip.... (just not sure what could be on it??!!??!)

The mussels extended his foot, and is out and filtering already... doing quite well right now, just curious if anyone has heard of this, or done it themselves....

Or, do you just feed it off to your tank inhabitants...

Thanks in advance for your input!!! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Sure thing. I guess I'm just nervous about introducing it into my tank. Wouldn't want it to introduce something that would make the tank crash or something like that... ! Worry wort I guess!

currently the mussel is doing pretty good... still filtering away. so, worst case scenario.... extra biology lesson for the kiddo's!

Andy is sitting next to me and said they are cold water species... that would explain sudden death

yeah, I lost that one, totally temperature related of course my brain was totally not working when I pulled that one! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif But I will throw a couple in my north pacific tank and see how they do in there....should be plenty cold.
