It would make a good starter camera, It's only 6.3 Mega pixel but is capable of taking to very nice shots. It can be used in full auto mode so it's as easy as a point and shoot. It has several presets like Portrait, Landscape, Sports,Close-up (Macro), Night.  If your an experienced or wanting to learn it also allows full manual control.  The lens included is 18-55mm, It's a lens I would use if shooting at a range of one foot to about 30-40 feet away It will focus further away but that point it's  better to use a telephoto lens. Here is a full review  http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos10d/ 
I sell it for $225 and if your interested I'll make you a package deal that includes the 70-300mm image stabilized telephoto lens for $425 total. That lens alone has been selling recently on E-Bay for $275-$350 range.  I upgraded to the Canon T2i so I have no use for it anymore.
