Looking to Buy Live Sand

Discussion in 'Buy/Sell/Trade' started by Jim, Nov 18, 2016.

  1. Just need to finish getting tank done and I have used the acid on rocks and everything is good juts looking for something for bottom so if anybody has any live sand would be great. I am in the Cedar Rapids area. I do not know the difference in the live sand and starting over do if I have that option I am not opposed to starting from scratch either with sand. Any help would be appreciated.

I would suggest starting from scratch on sand. Just too many problems that could come from someone else's old sand. I don't think it's worth the risk for something relatively cheap in the scope of the hobby.
They sell stuff packaged in a bag that is supposedly "live", but I'm not real sure how much benefit you get over just dry sand. I think to seed the tank some live rock from a clean and trusted source would be more beneficial than sand.
I used Dr Tim's one and only bacteria and pure ammonia last time I set up a small tank, then just waited out the bacterial cycle. Seemed to work very well, and absolutely no chance of adding anything you don't want into the tank.

I haven't ever really had big problems with re-using sand as long as it's rinsed well. And by well I mean about 1g of sand in a 5g bucket, full pressure spray with a hose nozzle to churn it up, pour off the water, repeat until clear (usually 3-4 times). Then repeat 1g of sand at a time until you're done with it all. Take a while but you are usually left with pretty useable sand.

  5. Thanks guys I think I am going to start from scratch after losing everything in the move I just want to do it right this time. I have had my tank cycling for about 4 months now still nothing in it so it's ready just trying to decide what to put in first I really want clowns but I know I need to add them all at 1 time so thats been holding me back a little it's a bit spendy I wanted the 2 normal ones and 2 black ones. I am going to petco to get sand to put in tank this week. Hoping for some good black friday deals to mabe get a few things for tank to start.

How big is the tank? I'd be cautious of adding 4 clowns to a tank. Maybe if they are all really small and very similar sized. I don't think you want any larger, dominate female in there with several other smaller ones. Clownfish can be pretty territorial and aggressive little guys.

I have some sand in a tote in garage I bought a couple years ago. I know it needs washed. I will look at it and get back to you. Probably 10-15 gallons worth

  8. Tank is a 90 gallon and They would all be bought at same time and all smaller I just wanted to do 2 black and 2 normal clowns. The stuff I have been reading says if you get them all at same time and they are all captive bread then they should be fine. But I am a Novice so thats why I wanted to ask
