I've got my new tank up and running now, but I my sense is that it doesn't have nearly the biodiversity that it needs.

So... I'd like to aquire the following items if someone out there with a well established tank.

    1) A handfull of cheato.

    2) A bit of live rock rubble.

    3) A couple smallish pieces of live rock (would like to trade for similar sized rock).

If anyone is willing to lend a hand helping me get things jump started again, I'd really appreciate it. I'd prefer to get stuff from 2 or 3 well established tanks to maximize the biodiversity as I really think it's one of the keys to a thriving tank.

    Thanks!

JB. I can spare a few pieces of live rock "rubble" for you. I seem to have the ability to grow purple coraline in my sump better than in my DT, so I hope that you like purple. LOL

I live in Marion too, so possibly not too far away. I to have something going on tonight, but I could meet you somewhere or possibly drop some off tomorrow (Wednesday) night when I am out and about. My wife gets all worried that our house isn't clean enough when people stop over here, so it is actually more convenient for me to drive to you than to have to clean the house. LOL

    Shoot me a PM.

@Nick Thanks! I'm not going to be around Wednesday night. Maybe later this week or this weekend?

@Bigkel Sounds good! I don't mind driving down to North Liberty. Let me see if I can locate some here in Marion/CR first. If not, I'll probably take you up on the offer.

Could I talk anyone into bringing a little bit if this stuff to Fall Fest for me? I'm still looking for samples of rock rubble, live sand and cheato to seed my tank.

I've yet to see a single pod, worm or anything else in the tank.

If so let me know. I'll be there all day tomorrow.

I can bring some rubble rock with purple coraline, and a little sand...

I will be getting there at about 1:30-1:45. I would rather get it to you early to make sure that you get it because I need to bolt after the raffle (and after a quick visit to AC&C)...

Thx, but I don't need any dry rock. I'm trying to increase the bio-diversity, so I'm looking for anything that can seed my new tank with pods, etc.

How did the sand and live rock rubble fare sitting in your car all afternoon? Hopefully OK.

It was no problem in my car. I had it double packed inside 2 styrofoam containers and the inside of my car stayed pretty warm all day anyway. I haven't seen any pod activity yet, but between that and the chaeto I got, hopefully there will be some soon.

Thanks again, you guys for bringing that stuff to the Fest for me. I'm really looking forward to seeing my tank start developing.

Pods can take a while to show up too. I know that I have a LOT of pods in my sump (where the rubble rock came from) as well as in my tank, but anything you would have gotten from me would have probably been in an "un-hatched" state, and thus take time to appear. The cheato you got would potentially have some live pods in it, but many times it is only a small number as the pods will fall into the water when the cheato is harvested. It will take a while for them to propogate and become noticable.

Hang in there. It will happen.

Yep, I'm aware. My old tank had a TON of pods and I'm a firm believer that a healthy population is one of the keys to a great tank. That's why establishing the appropriate biodiversity is so important to me. I don't expect to see a ton at this point, I'm just trying to spot a single one because I know that if I can find a live one, things will be good from here on out.

@Alex: I have some Chaeto now, but I wouldn't mind another sample if you've got some to give, especially if it's got a good number of pods.

JB, there are definitely a lot of pods in there.

On the other hand, there's aptasias growing within the chaeto too.

If you'd like to stop by and pick some up I'm around this week.

@Alex: Thanks but I'll probably pass for now. I was always fighting Aiptasia in my old tank and it's something I want to try and avoid in the new one if at all possible. Unfortunately, I already found some on a couple of the frags I bought at FF. Hopefully I eliminated before they spread, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Yeah, pods are a good sign of health. With my rock/sand, you probably got more of the microscopic goodies and only a couple of pods. Add in the cheato that hopefully had some, and as long as your tank parameters are good, you should see more and more.

Oh, and I hear you on the Aiptasia. I had that in my old 75 gallon about 10 years ago. Not a huge number, but to me any number of them is too many.

My current 120 is Aiptasia free, and I plan to keep it that way. Of course being pretty much fish-only helps. Oh, and the small elite force of Aiptasia raised pepermint shrimp don't hurt just in case. (Who knows if they actually would eat it anyway. It is so hit or miss with them.) Anyway, not a single sign of Aiptasia in the tank. Then again, I also wiped out anything that looked like a bad hitchhiker when I started. Like my one piece of rock that sprouted a single majano anemone, that started spreading. I killed that sucker as soon as it turned into 3. I wasn't sure what it was until after the fact, but I didn't care. LOL

Be diligent my friend, be diligent. Keep that Aiptasia out while you can.

Hey JB, were you at Ting's today for lunch. I swear that I saw you, but since we only met the one time at Fall Fest, I wasn't sure.
