As title suggests I've ready to upgrade (actually wife finally gave me the go ahead).

Lately I've been thinking through options so much that I've created "analysis paralysis" and am looking for input from fellow reefers.

I'll post some pictures of my constraints in this post.

    * Upgrading from a 72 gallon bowfront.

    * Need to be able to house purple tang and hippo tang. 120g+ tank seems to be in order and I've read both sides: tangs need the length of a 72" tank vs. tangs need the water volume.

    * Better landscaping options as it's a reef tank.

So here's a picture of my current setup. The house we just purchased was built in 1929 and the family room at the back appears to be an add-on, inspector guessed in the 40's or 50's. Not sure what's under the floor but will eventually find out as I'm hoping to drill through and put the sump/fuge/etc. in the basement. I'm also under the impression that tanks of 135g and below can go most anywhere while larger tanks may create support issues based on their weight when stocked. Current tank is 18" deep but it's a DIY overflow that you'll see keeps it from being flush with the wall - a 24" deep OEM Reef Ready would be extend into the room about the same as it could be placed much closer to the wall.

I photoshopped some dimensions - current tank is 48", 60" will fit nicely, 72" looks to be too long as it would overlap room divider and wife thinks it'll be tacky. Options are all over the place - 110, 120, 125 etc. Perfect dimensions would be 60" x 24" x 24" - might consider building my own acrylic if not too expensive.

Also been reading that a 48" 120 is easier to landscape than a 60" because of the depth.

Thanks for any help or advice!

    -Eric

For the tangs I would really try to convince yourself to go with a 72" tank. I went to a 180 and really like it because it gives the depth for the scape, but also the length.

yah the blue hippo I had was bigger than my hand, definitely need to go 72 at least! I got rid of her because she was just too big for my 48" 120. She was a cool, beautiful fish.

That's mine Andy, I'm throwing in the light for the $300 now, I've got to get this gone.
It's a sweet deal for someone!
BTW, haven't gotten one hit from CL, first time I've ever used it.

Appreciate the help so far - Big John's offering TREMENDOUS deal for someone but we're (wife) is thinking the 72" tank would be too long for where it's going.

So - most likely back to back to a 110g or 120g.

Anyone locally (CR/IC/etc) have a 110g reef or 120g reef that I could stop and take a look at the tank when stocked?

    Thinking 60x18x24 (110) and 48x24x24 (120).

As I have a 48" tank now I'm not sure I want to stay with this length - escpecially with Tangs.

    Thanks!

    -Eric

Is that the only place you can put the tank. I think with your wish list you would really want something larger than a 110 or a 120. If you really don't think you can go 72" wide, then I think your idea of the 60x24x24 tank would be the best alternative.

Yes - my wife doesn't want it on the hardwood floors in the living room and our basement isn't finished so I know it would get neglected.

60x24x24 would work - haven't found a used one for sale.

36" would be too deep - 24" would be max.

And it would weigh a ton!

Yea, I have the 250DD. I would never consider putting it on the main floor without some serious structural support added underneath it. But I do LOVE the dimensions.

I would say your best bet would be to have one custom built it will be tough to find one the exact size you want.
