For anyone that can't afford a generator I suggest picking up an AC-DC converter for your car

Losing power is awful for our systems but we ALL should have a backup power source available to run at least the bare essential for the tanks. We were without power for several hours today also and yes, country folks often times are the last to get power. Everyone gets very frustrated and concerned about our systems. There are ways which one can help their tanks when no power is available. I remember Eons ago when we didn't have a generator and lost power during the summer. Cooling the tanks wasn't an issue but oxygen was! I remember I spent too many hours inverting a large glass beneath the water and then righting the glass up to create more oxygen for the tankmates! That was for 3 cichlid tanks so I was going from one tank to the next for all those hours :-/ I didn't lose a fish and my efforts were rewarded :9)

We have a very large generator we currently use. Because we are old, tired and weak, our plans are to install a whole house generator :0) That's an option for you, Rod!! :0)

I have been in my current house for 11 years and never was without power for more than a couple of minutes. Today I was for 5 hours. I have a generator and I plugged in what I thought would be the essentials. WRONG. ....Everything but my sump pump. I now have a finished basement with a backed up sump pit and a mess. I vacuumed up around 50 gallons of water from my carpeting and it still is wet.when I figured out I was taking on water and plugged in my pump it ran for 45 minutes straight pumping an inch and a half solid stream of water.

I flooded my apartment today... Without power for 5 minutes... No check valve on my main pump... Hmmmm... :O thank god I had a valve on the pipe to grab hold of quick, but it was too late! Sump overflowed! Water everywhere!

We lost power twice yesterday for the first time since we moved into the house 3 years ago. Then again around about 7:00pm it flickered a few times. totally new experience for us in this house... Our previous house lost power all of the time.

After having one of the new "up to code" arc-fault breakers pop on the circuit for the fish tank twice (the last time a few weeks ago when it left the 120g without power for about 24 hours with nobody home), I knew that I needed to get the arc-fault out of there. I was highly concerned about O2 loss, but everything survived.

I have a small UPS that I use on some of my computer gear so that when power is lost, it keeps the stuff running for a few minutes (in case the power comes back on) and then gracefully shuts down the computers. I might need to move that over to the tank and use it with a powerhead or bubbler. Of course, ideal situation without having to get a full generator would be to get a UPS or battery system that only turns on when power is lost (turn on the bubbler when the outlet loses power) so that it can cover the times when nobody is home.

Tornado hit La Porte yesterday, we were without power until about 11 last night. Now I am stuck in the house due to the flooded driveway that has a river flowing over it.

How do you backfeed your generator into the house? How big of a generator do you need to do that?

Just get a 220 in the panel of your garage. Get a plug or make one for your generator to go in the wall, i had to make one. When power is out turn off your main breaker so when power comes back on it doesnt fry everything. Turn off the breakers for stuff ya dont need dryer range etc. Turn generator on and flip the 220 on that it feeds from and wala. When neighbors get power turn the 220 off generator off main back on and life goes on.
