Does anyone remember who the speaker was that talked about LED lights.
Also is there a video of that and will it get posted on the site?

My guess is that there are people on this board that have the information you want about LED's and MH's.

Agree with BRad, check out the CORAL magazine. Sanjay's talk is published in the recent issue.

In summary... As I remember it

Led is close to being as good as mh but most led still lack adequate par at the bottom of a 24 inch tank.
Most led also lack red spectrum.
He was not impressed with the stats of the new ecotech fixture
Vertex, Ai, and maxspect all had good ratings

Led is the way of the future but needs some refinements before it's ready for prime time as complete replacement for MH.

I am sure others can add to this...

I was bummed to hear this wasn't filmed so thanks for they summary.  It was as I had suspected it would be.
That said I'll be sticking to my MH's and supplement with LED's.

I have completely switched to DIY LED I get just as good of growth as MH and I think the colors in my corals pop more under led then MH. plus I haven't ran my chiller since I switched I don't even have it hooked up anymore and it used to run all year long

I think LEDs are going to replace all the other lighting, but they are still not quite there yet. I have been doing lots of reading on LEDs and I feel that the multi chip LEDs Will take the lead in the lighting wars to come. They may not have the par per watt as some of the current crees but they will handle more wattage and you will need fewer LEDs to get the same coverage. They will be able to mix colors in the chips to help cover the spectrum of light that the corals need, and with the higher watts they will not need to use such a focused lens or reflector to penetrate the water thus needing fewer LEDs.

I also have the DIY LED's and I don't regret it for an instant.

This is starting to sound more and more like the people who used to be convinced that CD's didn't sound as good as records.

Some of my corals clearly like the LED's less but many of them clearly like them more... It's a wash... In any case, I'll gladly trade 5% growth for a 50% reduction in my electricity usage.

    I agree
There a lot of really successful tanks running under led.
It only going to get better and more refined....

After I get my main tank going again, I will start looking to make the switch.
So far from what I saw at the show I think the maxspect, and and Vertex units look most promising.

I just emailed maxspect about their lighting recommendations for my 90. they recommend 4 and their fixture only site 4 inchs above the top of the tank. i am guessing with a diy mount that will allow me to hang them higher i would be able to get away with just 2. I know with AI 12inch above the water 2 is all i need. What i do like about the maxspect is how you can tilt and turn them to fit your needs.

Why not just get two of the AI fixtures and ask about the mount they were showing at MACNA? Less money for the same coverage. If they recommend 4 inches, I think there's a reason for that.

I like the look of the maxspect is the biggest reason.

My concern with the AI SOL that I have over my 29biocube is that I don't know what % to run them on.
    My current cycle is
    11am to 12pm 50% blue and 50% royal blue
    12pm to 7pm 65% white, 75% blue, and 75% royal blue
    7pm to 8pm 50% blue and 50% royal blue
    8pm to 11am 5% blue and 5% royal blue
Not sure if this is too much, and know that I should get a par meter to test it, and have talked to Xroads about using his. Just haven't had the time just yet.
I love the color of everything better then with the sunpod with a 20k bulb. Just not sure if this is too much light, not enough, or what.
Its only been on my tank for about 9 days now, so I haven't seen any effects just yet good or bad.
    Looking for some good advice

personally for that size tank i would consider turning them down 10-15% over all and adjust from there. What is your ramp up and down time? for example how long does it take the whites to go from 0 to 65% and then back?

I give it an hour ramp time up and down. I started it at 50% for all 3 lights when I first hooked up the light. It just didn't seem as bright as the MH, or as blue as I wanted it to be. I moved it up 5% every few days intil it got to where its at now.
