What would be your goal for the reactor?
If it was to harvest the algae to feed your fish then it would probably work well.
If the goal is to control phosphates I feel like you'd need a good sized reactor depending on your tank volume of course.

I haven't used this before but I've seen the video tutorials and it looks pretty darn cool haha. I'm also looking into some sort of Macro algae grow out and there's some diy algae scrubbers that utilize just one side of the sump and the light clips on the outside(I'm not sure how effective they are tho).
Hope this helps! As always please correct me if I'm wrong

They are really easy to make. I took a old Zeo reactor and water proof LED strip lights. Siliconed one end to the reactor, let it dry and wrapped it all tight. Then siliconed the other end to the reactor. I had it in the tank and just had to grab the handle and give it a tug. Pump kept running and didn't have to turn anything off. Yes they do work, providing you have the nutrients for macro. I carbon dose so nitrates are very low.

When I redid my sump the other month I made a up flow algae scrubber with the down spout of the overflow and a 6 inch long square bubble curtain the upflow chamber is 6 inch by 2 inch with a 90 watt led and I have to clean every other week

I have one I made out of a old calcium reactor. It's about 4.5ft tall and has a 8in diameter. Works great. It takes about a month to fill up. But I also run a small amount of gfo

Anyone know parameters of their water running one of these with no gfo?
Always thought this was rather curious as compared to the traditional algae scrubbers..

I may try this... I have the waterproof lights and an unused zeo reactor sitting around. I didn't think the waterproof lights were actually able to be submerged though.. I thought they were alright in more of a rain situation. Have you had any issues?

BRS made a couple videos about chaeto refugiums with different lighting. They tested the nutrients and even the cheap CFL bulb was very effective.

No issues. I ran it in my frag tank for a few months. You just need to make sure you silicone the end to make sure it's completely sealed. Works really well if it's not below a tank with limited space.
