I just went to ace hardware and found a magnet to hold up my frag rack... It is a DIY thing so nothing special, but I didn't really think about what could happen when I put the magnet in... Does anybody know if having the magnet in my tank is harmful or something that can contaminate the water?

I am not entirely sure, I'd be very leary of it though... most of the professional mag racks out there say something about being epoxy coated.

I would imagine the magnet could rust or at the very least leach trace minerals... mess with metal levels in your tank. Some fish and inverts are extremely sensitive to metal levels.

Just do your research well, and let us know what you come up with! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif

  3. you can buy the smallest mag float for 6 to 8 dollars and it will hold up a peice of egg crate/light diffuser 7 deep x10 wide i have had one of these in my tank for 12 mos using some frag superglue to bond the 2 together and it wont scratch the glass and your not putting monster frags on the rack

I would not let bare metal or magnets inside your tank!

I have read about negative effects of high levels of dissolved metals such as iron, in tanks. If i recall it had to do with tanks in the 50's 60's having iron reinforcement and the iron along the top would corrode, dissolve in the tank water and cause issues. Also, low quality iron (most magnets are) will rust quite rapidly and you will end up with wisps of rust shedding from the iron.

test it in a cup. most likely the magnet will have a chemical coating to prevent rust initially but is far from reliable.
