I would like to get a mandarin.  I have been seeding my refugium with pods and feeding them.  I now see pods and amphipods on my display tank glass.
Is there a way I can tell if my pod population is stable enough to feed the little guy?  I would hate to get one and then have it starve to death because i don't have enough of a pod population.
    Thank you
    Mary

    Its basically time & size.

If you have been set up 9+ months, have a 75 or bigger you should be ok, especially if you are seeing alot now. Having a refugium really helps your population alot.

I have only had the 125 set up since February. So do you feel i should wait a few more months, just to be safe?

I would wait til July or so since your tank is nice and big.

ORA is going to start selling mandarins which eat regular fish food. Don't know if you are aware or not. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

My sump is a 30L with at least a 10 gallon refugium ( I basically have it divided into 'thirds"

Thank you for the advice. I will wait awhile.

I herd about this but it gives people the wronge idea. Yes they will eat frozen food but they will still need a good pod population unless you intend to spot feed them. I have a mandarin that eats all frozen foods but the problem is that the other fish are so much faster that by time he slowly gets around to eating a few pieces it's all gone. So about twice a week I take a turkey baister and give him a load of brine when I feed my lps.

I was reading one fourm where a guy used a Olive jar.  Since the Opening was too small for any other fish to get in.  He could put food in it for the Mandrin .  She/He could go in and eat.  Was a cool idea.

Plus they Eat all day long not just 2-3 times a day.

The more food they can "graze"  the healthy they will be in the tank.

I am able to target feed my mandarin chopped pieces of mysis.  He didn't take to it right away, but finally does eat the mysis.
