I ordered a couple Marineland MJ1200s back in October to power the two reactors I have running and they both appear to have taken a dive; the first one after only a month and the second went today. It was pretty much the same story for both pumps; I cleaned the reactor and when I plugged the pump back in the reactor didn't fill. I took the pumps apart and gave em a cleaning and they still can't push more than a mere trickle of water (seriously, I could pump more water using a turkey baster). The impeller spins as it should although now with slightly more noise. At first glance they both appear to be functioning properly but obviously something is wrong. I feel like the odds of getting two faulty pumps are slim to none.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any tips to get em back working properly? I know Marineland aren't the Cadillac of water pumps but I would expect more than two months of use out of em.

Sounds like they may be cavitating. real common problem with them. Sometimes you have to play with them a bit to get them going

Thanks Craig! Can you provide a little more insight? I've been fidgeting with the impellers on both pumps and nothing really seems to be making a difference.

truth be told, sometimes I just smack it on the bottom of the tank a few times & that gets it going.

I've had the same problems with the same pump on my GFO Reactor. Taking it apart an putting it back together/ smacking it around tell it worked properly is what did it for me as well.

I've had several pumps, not just Maxijets, that need to be re-primed if the water drains out of the volute or if an air bubble gets trapped in it. Sometimes tapping the pump will as already described gets things going. Sometimes, if you are able to turn the pump upside down so water can fill in around the impeller, it will start pumping. Other times, I've used some other method to put a siphon on the pump outlet or some positive pressure on the pumps suction side.

Yup give her a good tap or two and that seems to usually work for me, I have 2 MJ900s that I pulled out of a storage tote (been in there for 4 years+) and fired up right away! Good pump, probably just got an air bubble in there!

I've tried smacking these bad boys to get em going as suggessted and no luck; these damn things still wont work for me. I filled the sink up, plugged the pumps in and gave em a good couple whacks with no success. Do they need to be in deeper water? I have pretty much given up on these; I plan on contacting Marineland to try and get em replaced under warranty.

I contacted Marineland and they're sending me two new impellers; no questions asked. The representative assisting me suggested they might have de-magnetized; didn't know that was possible but hopefully it does the trick. I was pretty impressed by their willingness to help and ship out replacement parts at no charge. If you ever have issues with one of their products I wouldn't hesitate to give em a call
