I thought someone should start a newer thread about their experiences thus far with the gyre in their tanks at home. I've had mine going for 8 days. Here is a comical picture of the flow I made as a Christmas present. The yellow circle and line shows where my orange branching montipora was and where I moved it to. I only had the gyre on a 20% flow and the tissue started coming off the skeleton of it. The polyps are ok and extending still but the white skeleton is showing, hopefully it grows over again. The birdsnest, pocillopora and millepora love the flow however and are extending great. I have it on a constant flow right now instead of a pulse because it was causing the return line flow to interfere with the circulation around the tank. Anyone else have opinions about the the gyre in their tank or my tank good or bad?

I hated mine at first due to a minor issue it had. Got it figured out and it's been running great. As soon as I installed it tons of junk got stirred up into the water it has the best even flow I've ever seen and fish and corals have responded to it in a positive way it is a bit louder then I hoped but have read that they quiet down. Ecotech MP 40s are built better and have a much nicer controller then the Gyer but once it set shouldnt have to even mess with the controller. Also like the fact that when you clean yor glass you don't have to worry about bumping it and having to mess with it to stop the knocking noise like the MPs. So as of now I'm verry impressed I just hope they last I'll do another review after a couple months.

Oh and I'll add from my terrible drawing I didn't use any depth perception illustration. The flow is pushing out the top from both sides of the gyre across the tank. The bottom parts of both sides is pulling and creating a undertow as shown by the darker blue lines.

I like mine. I had issues with it not running right, they replaced the motor housing and shipped it out the same day so I rate customer service as outstanding. I find it better than my mp40's in every way except two. It needs the stronger magnet for 3/4" glass and the MP40 is ok so there is another $60, and I still like the vortech cord outside the tank. Other than that I like the gyre controller better, it flows more and can produce alternating gyre and has much less noise per flow.

I am running the gyre at 40% vertically with each rotor pointing opposite directions switching flow every 10 min, I also run 2 mp40's in lagoon mode at 7o% anti sync on my 120g. I will crank the gyre up more when the stronger mag comes. I am using the extra larger flipper mag cleaner to help hold it in place.

I have two gyres. They are placed vertically, one on each back corner of my tank. I run one at a time every 3-4 hours changing which one is running. I really like them placed vertically and in the back for a few reasons. I have alot of LPS on my sandbed and running the gyres vertically and toward the top of the tank decreasses the flow at the sand level some. The flow still has a gyre affect but the flow on the reef is more random instead of unidirection across the top and bottom. And I love that they are almost invisible but my tank has a ton of flow. The fish love to swim against the current very close to the gyre. With other pumps it was too much concentrated flow and the fish tried to avoid this. It is also quieter because some of the sound is lost behind the tank although the sound was never loud enough for me to worry about.

What size tank do you have Rhyme? I've considered trying the vertical placement but I would probably only use 1 and alternate the flow every few hours.

I have a 150g tall. depending on the layout of your tank the alternating flow function should work fine. Since you already have a gyre it wouldnt hurt to try it and see what happens.

I just installed mine last week and immediately had issues. walker1, what was your issue?

I'm in touch with Carlos about mine. It wouldn't run at less than 50% flow for more than 10-15 seconds, it would shut off and the controller would blink red. I read on the CoralVue support forum that the unit needed to get a bacterial coating and you were supposed to run it at 40% flow or more for 3-4 weeks or something like that. That made no sense to me because then what happens when you deep clean it with vinegar, you have to break it in again? Carlos said they would send me a new controller that will hopefully fix that issue.

The second issue I have is that it is, IMO, loud. My tank is on a wood frame stand on a wood floor so the sound at 50% flow transmits literally through the entire house. At 30%, hardly noticeable. But I can't run it at that. I took it all the way apart at Carlos' recommendation and found one of the black cap bushings (that slides onto the motor shaft, the 1cm long sprocket that fits in the propeller boot) was damaged, 2 of the ridges has nicks in them, so I don't know if that is throwing off the balance or what. So they're sending me replacements for those as well.

The problem I have is that I have a 18" tall 24" wide Elephant Ear Leather that sits right in front of the Gyre, and when it's running at 50% that's just too much and it closes up, leaving the clownfish without the nice carpety home. So I put my WP40 back in there on low for now...I can't run that on wavemaker mode either, because of the leather. Finicky son of a gun!

I had the same problem with my controller and also the same issue with the black bushing Carlos sent me new controller and bushing and it worked great. As for the sound it does get quieter after it runs a week or so . The break in is more for the ceramic bushings to to wear smooth that's what makes it start to quiet down which doesent take long and vinager cleaning won't affect the ceramic parts. I would just give it a chance I was very frustrated also to the point I wanted to send it back or throw it in front of a train. But now I'm very happy and have never been so impressed by a piece of aquarium equipment my skimmer has never worked so good as it really gets all the junk moved around into the overflow I took both my MP 40s out. It was also helpful to see Romans setup that really helped so when you get your new parts your more than welcome to stop over and see how mine is setup or i could stop over and help you out I need to get to Des Moines sometime soon anyways

Great to hear all that walker1, thanks a lot! It makes sense that the bushings night need to break in a bit, those might "push back" against the pump causing the noise, I do notice a bit of audible speed variations that have lessened from day one.

My unit was one of the first ones from BRS. Maybe I should have given it a few months while the kinks got worked out but I just wanted it! Then it took me a month+ to hook it up LOL

I am very impressed with my GYRE also. I never had any issues at all with mine so I am lucky with that. I think the controller could be of better quality but with that said once you have it set you shouldn't have too mess with it. They are pretty versatile. Maybe you could try to mount it vertically and try a different impeller combination one running in different directions so it doesn't disrupt your elephant ear.

Mine's still working great. 20% flow. It has pretty much guaranteed my upper corals must be high flow loving and my sandbed corals must be moderately high flow loving. I tried the vertical placement for a few hours the other day and didnt see that it helped create any pockets of lower flow. It's doing what it said it would do, but I'd say for this size of tank and the way my rockwork is placed, most soft corals and certain LPS like frogspawn are out as they will get annoyed with the flow. Which is fine as I am going with an LPS/SPS tank.

The link below is a vid of my tank and how my gyre is placed. The way my rocks and overflows are the vertical corner placement adds some turbulance and somewhat rondom flow. The gyre is at 40% continuous flow. You may have to cut and paste.
