yea she doesn't seem to realize the refrigerator uses more power than both my tanks combined in a day

anyway.. just getting frustrated. appreciate all the help i am getting.

i know i am in a very dire need of more LR. I'd like to get another 30 pounds in asap. most place want like $2.50 a pound so yet again back to the issue of spending money. I wish I had a wife like you Andy lol my tank would be huge and fully stocked and functioning correctly by now if I did. All I can say is keep her happy and around cuz she is one of a kind

I am actually in Hiawatha so the tap water is harder than CR. Not sure about chem differences.

I will report back on tank status once I get the RO unit here and RO water into the tank with a 50% water change

I am with you Armydog I run my 130 with treated tap now for 7 months with no problem, but I do think it matters a GREAT deal where you live. I am getting an RO unit though cause I now have an algae problem I can not get rid of. And as far as the whole wife thing, I was told if I get another tank I better find a new house to put it in. LOL

Just to add in some more info, I am now getting a horrible smell from my tank. Any ideas as to a cause? I did a 10 gallon water change, using RO from Pet's Playhouse, after finding the odor. My RO unit wont arrive until Wednesday if it arrives on time.

Move whats left in your tank and look for dead snails, fish remains ect. Is there anything left alive in there, clean up crew... ?

For the record I never said phosphates would "kill" fish...just said I'd check for them and the article below gives reasons for me saying that.

    http://freshaquarium.about.com/od/watercare/a/phosphates.htm

    Effect of Phosphates
Fortunately phosphates do not directly harm your fish, even at high levels. However, the algae blooms that result from elevated phosphates can ultimately cause problems for the aquarium inhabitants. For instance, green water can deplete the oxygen, which in turn can harm the fish.

If the skimmer is pulling large amounts of skim mate there's an obvious overload of algae present in the tank, with only minimum flow in the tank I'm guessing the o2 levels are extremely low which could be causing fish deaths.

Or there's a chance I'm plum crazy and have no idea what I'm talking about, either way good luck pulling it back together

No Jason, your spot on about that. However I think the green water has to get pretty bad before those hypoxic cycles start occurring.

no sign of anything dead. i have 7 astera snails on the glass and can see at least 8 of my hermit crabs walking around.

    i have the Corallife dual T5 - 1 - 10000K and 1 - atinic

if i have time later today i am prolly going to go raid 20 to 30 gallons of RO from Pet's Playhouse and do another water change

well this morning nothing was found dead.. this evening around 5pm when heather and i went downstairs to work some more on the basement project, i found my other damsel - last fish - dead.. i have not found anything else in the tank dead at this time. i do have both my aqua clear 110 and the rp1000 running now to filter the water. i didnt have the funds to go get any RO today to do the water change. working with the misses on our schedule for tm where if time is allowed i want to run past Pet's Playhouse and have the water tested again. still waiting on my RO unit, ups shows it getting here late wednesday.

i am still unsure as to what is causing this issue but will be converting to RO water as soon as i get the unit. also looking into the basic at home test kit, can anyone shine some light on the basic daily or weekly water tests i should be doing?

api test kits are easy to use, cheap, and accurate enough for what you need at this point.

I am sure you could find these locally as well. I noticed you mention pets playhouse as your store of choice, but next time you are in iowa city check out Coralville bay and Petco. (I know what you are thinking about petco, but Brandon the reef guy there is a GIRS member and very knowledgeable.) there is another great place in north liberty, sea of marvels, just off 380 (Hung is amazing and worth the drive). I think the livestock quality difference between pets playhouse and Coralville bay is pretty substantial. Its worth a look, don't just take my word for it. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

Actually petco in coralville has a pretty good selection of live rock/ corals as well as SW fish. In addition Brandon is always happy to special order anything you might need (or just want /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif haha) Prices here are very reasonable. My Favorite in the CR/IC area is still Coralville Bay.The owner of Coralville bay, Ed fisher, is a great guy its near walgreens on the coralville strip. They are making an awesome comeback since the flood.
