There has been a lot of discussion lately in threads about members not willing to help non members. Personally I think this is a false comment as I see it fairly frequently where members spend time answering non members questions.
Many members are more then happy to help a person out regardless of their membership status but are unwilling to go out of their way  for non members.
Here is the thing, this is a club and like many clubs members get preferential treatment by other members.  It should not come as a shock as most clubs of all kinds are like this.  People pay their dues to be a part of something and like magic the rest are willing to go to great lengths to help you out. It is just the nature of the beast and honestly many of you get an awful lot of help, use our buy sell trade forum, and never join.

Bottom line is members of any club will get preferential treatment then non members, but to say nobody will help you because of your status is really not true.

I agree totally that its a very false statement for the whole of the Club. I have never been turned down when I needed help. Best thing to do if you can't figure out if you want to join this great club that I have not even been apart of for even a year yet is to come to some of our meetings. Right now people are taking a little break because its summer and there is a lot of things going on outdoor.
As for people not willing to help because your not a member then that is on them not the club. For every 2 people like that there are 10 not like that. Just don't expect the moon in the hobby and pay for your help a little. One of the first ways to pay is to join the club for a small, vary small fee of 20.00 bucks. You don't have to, but regardless of what you think you will get back your 20 bucks and most already have.Ask any of the non members I have already helped. The other way to pay is by taking the time too meet with people before you ask for hand outs. Everyone want hand outs and there are many great people out there that will do that for you, but get to know people and network. The only way to do this is attend a club meeting or hook up with a mentor. Many of us on here would gladly become a mentor and help as much as we can.
I will invite anyone one to my home and talk fish anytime I get the chance, but don't expect me to come to yours and not get any pay in return for gas or a pop or something. If I turn it down then that's ok, but don't expect it for free. I even hope to hold another club meeting real soon. August perhaps . To everyone non members and members please join me in this Face to Face meeting place campaign. This really needs to happy more and more and this club will grow very big fast.
Also as a non member you are missing out on the members section of the Club you are missing not being a member. Think about that

I use the site, so I pay. There is no free lunch, this forum isn't large enough to sell substantial advertising space to pay for operations. Some would be inclined to just take the free route of other forums, but consider the premium you are paying in equipment as a result of the cost manufactures must pay to play on these forums. Besides the membership is a minisucle 20$, that I would gladly pay just to have a reef society in the DSM area helpful or otherwise. You can't put a price on finding/befriending people who share you passion.

Sorry, this rant is via IPhone and not in the best English nor sentence structure.

Apparently I should have included a double post clause in my IPhone disclaimer as well, you'd think I'm new to this./DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/doze.gif
