Looking for some advice.... I'm breaking down a 40 Breeder that has been running for over a year. Planning on transferring all the live rock and live sand over to a new 90 cube. Obviously I will need to add more sand, so here is my question. What's best? Stir up old sand before taking out of the exiting tank and place on bottom of new system with new sand over the top? Totally get rid of old sand all together and start over? Or place new sand on bottom and old sand on top?

I figured if I syphon out most of the water in the existing tank and then stir up the sand bed before syphoning out the rest, I should be ok. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I think at a minimum, once you have everything out but the sand and water, stir up good to get all the gunk into the water, then you might let it settle for a bit (a lot will stay suspended) and then siphon off the top water and pitch, then siphon out the sand into a bucket (use a 3/4" vinyl hose to get sand + water out) and that goes into a bucket, when the bucket is full of water, pour the stuff off the top and continue until you have 1/2 bucket of sand, then pour off again and start a new bucket. Repeat until done. Then when you put in destination tank, mix it with the new sand.

I don't think you need to rinse it out with a hose like you do new/dry sand, but you could. You would effectively kill anything by doing that, but you'll have clean sand. If you do as I outlined above, you'll get rid of most of the nastiness but it won't completely kill off any bacteria or random life in the sand.

Addtion: leave as much water in the tank as you can, it's easier to siphon out sand with the 3/4" hose method if you have a lot of water in the tank. It goes about 1 part sand to 8-10 parts water when you are siphoning it out.

As @Turboaquatic stated /\ would siphon old water and mix. When I did this have a very little cycle. And everything was happy and healthy at the transition.

I got rid of old sand and got new when I moved my 120. There was a ton of crap built up in there. I felt like starting with new was a better option for me.

But stirring and siphoning sounds like a good plan too.

Ive never siphoned out the old sand or just used brandnew when switching tanks. When upgrading to a bigger tank I have always put old sand on the bottom then added new sand on the top of the old. I forget where I read that at but using that method I have never lost a fish or coral and I never had another cycle. I have done that probably 8 times since I have been in the hobby
