Hello, GIRS members! MY name is Cory, and my husband and I will be moving from the Buffalo, NY, region to Des Moines in early November. We have a 90-gallon salt-water display tank that runs along with a 55-gallon rock only tank and a 20-gallon sump (water moves from the display tank, down to the basement and into the rock-only tank and then down into the sump tank with protein skimmer before heading back up to the display tank). We've had the tank for about 6 years, but it was a 10+ year system when we bought it, so it functions like a very mature tank.

We aren't quite sure how we are going to handle the move, especially as we may have to be in temporary housing for a bit if selling our house here and closing on one in Des Moines don't line up right. Have any of you ever made a half-cross-country move of your system?

Also, here in Buffalo, I have a aquarium service guy who comes by every other week and provides water changes and general maintenance, as I've never been very confident with the chemistry of it and don't have the supplies for a RO set-up. I know many people consider this cheating, but hey, gotta know your limits :) Anyone have any recommendations for such a service in the Des Moines area? We haven't found a house yet, but we are looking in the West Des Moines and surrounding suburbs area.

Welcome @coreenm@coreenm! I'm in WDM myself.

Regarding the move, it can be done but it's one of those things where you would probably pack up the tank last, and set it up first. If you are looking at temporary housing, I would seriously consider taking a short break and starting over. It's a lot easier to set up as a new system. Any changes you make like moving rock around, changing flow patterns, etc will throw a mini cycle even in an established tank, so a total move is going to throw a big wrench in things.

If it were me, what I would do is sell off the fish and corals, and maybe keep as much of the rock as possible. You can store the rock in partially filled buckets and keep it submerged, then once you arrive you can put them in Brute cans and get the water circulating and heating. Essentially, you'll "cook" your rocks in the process (which might be a benefit, long term, actually). Very low maintenance. Maybe a few water changes and some filtration like GFO or carbon, a skimmer if you can swing it.

Then once you are in a final place, you have time to get all your plumbing done right, get an RODI system, find the local stores, meet up with some of the club members, and get it back on it's feet the right way rather than rushed.

Maybe if you have some prized corals, you can put those in a separate bucket for the move, with a battery powered air pump and a heater on a power inverter, same with a special fish possibly. Then get a 40 Breeder at Petco and set that up with lighting and filtration. You would have a decent chance of saving it.

As far as tank maintenance services, there are a few and you may get contacted on here, but there's not anyone that is really on here and a sponsor for that purpose, no one speaking up a lot at least. I might be able to point you in the right direction and can definitely point you away from the wrong people.

Thanks! I appreciate the insight. I was thinking along the same lines about only trying to save the rock. I don't really have any special corals or fish at this time, so keeping as much of the live rock with it's mature colonies intact is my priority.

  5. WELCOME TO GIRS!!!

des moines has a ton of reefer and fowlr members

i personally have never moved a tank that far but i did buy a tank west of minneapolis and moved it to waterloo IA which was a 5 hr trip driving 1 way. i brought the tank and livestock and 90% of the water from the complete running system.

i dont think or know if you will be able to do that.

    Thanks for the welcome!

Joshua- How did you manage to move even the water? Lots of buckets? I don't think that's in the cards for me. I was hoping to bring a vast majority of my live rock, but not the livestock or sand. The idea of bringing the water wasn't even on my radar, lol :)

Can any of you think of some of the tank service companies in the area that I can look into?

There used to be a couple guys in WDM that were doing maintenance, but I'm not sure they are still doing it. I don't really know why there isn't a company that advertises/sponsors on here, because there has to be at least a couple in town that are worth recommending. I would start by contacting the owners of a restaurant in downtown Des Moines called Splash Seafood Bar & Grill and see who they use. They have about 10 big saltwater tanks and have gone through a couple of different maintenance companies over the last few years.

Welcome to the site! This is a great community.

On the subject of transporting your tank and livestock - it is going to probably be the worst part of your move :(

I only have experience moving complete systems 2.5hrs...you're transitioning a time zone!

Just a thought, and I hate to be 'that guy' and ask someone to volunteer but...would someone be willing to receive an overnight package of Cory's corals and fish, and hold on to them until they're moved in? I would step up to the plate but I've only got a BC29 at the moment...

Just trying to trouble shoot, I figure that may be the most pain-free way to get them moved. Brainstorming :)

Hey there and welcome to the area! If you get here in time it sounds like you could make some connections at Fall Fest. if you're still in need of help I would recommend Adams Aquatics. He's been around a long time and is a trustable guy/business.
