    how many would be needed for a 120 standard 48x24x24 reef. is one good

    I would recommend two.

    2 would be best. 1 would be ok if you had some supplemental flow.

    I use 2 on my 120 + a tunze 6060 (2200gph) and I wish I had more flow still, But would probably opt for a surge tank as my next source of flow.
