So I have been browsing RC used forums daily and I know the value of MP40W's. My question is more of one of advice. I am able to purchase two Vortech MP40W's for a total of $700 (so $350 each). That is about $70 off MSRP a pop. The $700 includes shipping too. These are brand new full warranty intact and everything. Would you grab them or just wait for something else used to come along in the $250-$300 range?

Where are they coming from? I actually bought one from a reef snctuary group buy for that price and it worked out fine. It even broke and ecotech did warranty work on it.

Well, from the forums that I've been monitoring, it seems like they are great pumps, but have a tendency to have issues with the wet side. The dry side seems to be pretty solid (not from personal experience, but from reading the EcoTech forum on RC). It seems like they need to do some improvements to the engineering on the wet sides before they reach the reliability of the Tunze pumps. That being said, the warranty that comes with new pumps has a certain amount of value to it; as much as it would cost for repairs over that same period of time. One thing that I like about EcoTech, is that their parts are cheap compared to other vendors. In my opinion, saving only $50 puts you about even. I would have to save between $75 to $100 before I would buy used vs. new considering the value of the warranty and the fact that when you buy new, you know the usage history and how the device has been handled/treated.

AJ- I think Bela said they are new. So this discount is for two new mp40's with warranties. I've never actually bought these pumps, as that is WAY too much for me. They are nice, but not that nice. The only reason I would buy one is to put the cool wave motion in the tank, but the wave does nothing for the corals...

Right, I understand that. I guess my message wasn't that clear. What I was doing was presenting the proposition of buying new vs. used. New, you pay more and get a warranty and that warranty is worth $$ in your pocket. Used, you pay less, but you have to pay significantly less in order to make it a good deal and understand that some of your savings may be consumed by repairs.

To answer some question, yes these are brand new in box, generation 2. I would be getting them from a personal friend from California who can get them at a vendor price. I am told that this is just a small mark-up (5% or something) and is basically an employee price.

Snowman --- you are saying that there was an MP40W WITH battery backup NEW for $350? Where was that deal? That is less than something like that goes for used /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

The reason I am considering these is savings on electric and the virtually zero amount of heat displaced into the tank as I am going to be doing my tank without a chiller. The random flow is also a plus. Also, the way my tank is built there isn't really room for internal cords, so the vortech is really the only option outside of a closed loop. Initially closed loop is what I had my heart set on, but I would be getting the flow of one pump at nearly 5x the electrical consumption. I am trying to map out future expenses (in this case power consumption) as well in the price and expect in about two years time they will have paid for themselves, maybe a little sooner.

All in all it seems that the price isn't THAT amazing? I have seen used go for around $300-350, maybe a little cheaper on forums with new going from $250-390. MSRP is $420, which is how I calculated the savings. I have no idea. The reason I asked here is because this is a price I can get until the end of February. That said for me this isn't chump change, it all came together with selling some "old" computer parts and misc. other things. The tank is coming along, but with curing my rock it will still be a little while before I get it up and running so from that point of view I can certainly wait.

So here's something to consider too. I got a call from Vortech today about my Gen 1 pumps that I sent them. I was expecting them to check them out, upgrade software, upgrade wet sides (3 of them) and end up paying about $100 shipped. Well, bad news. Turns out the motors themselves were basically toast on both of them and all of the wet sides needed to be replaced. Now, I wrote them a letter telling them that I had just purchased them second hand from RC. When they called to tell me the bad news, the did offer me a special price to fix everything as they felt really bad that someone pawned their bad stuff off on me and that this was my first experience with their products. 3 new wet sides and 2 new motors set me back $160. Couple that with the prior money that I spent on them and I'm still sitting over $250 under retail, but it's not nearly as sweet a deal as what it originally was.

Now, I want to point out that regular price for 3 new wet sides and new motors is *way* over $400, so they took quite a bit off the price and I'm very thankful for that. Repair is one day turnaround and I should have them back on Thursday. I must say, considering the situation, they had no obligation to give me such a great price on the repairs. I'm really impressed with their customer service!!

If you buy new, you avoid all of this. This is always the chance that you take when buying used...especially when you don't know the seller or their reputation.

If we get enough interest, we could probably get a sweet deal from a sponsor.

We would probably have to order a minimum of 10.

Well, I would be up for a group buy if people were interested. Depending on price I would buy two, maybe three. I guess let's turn this thread into seeing who all would be interested? From fairly old posts (maybe 1-2 years old) I have seen group buys sell them for around $335 a pop, however I am not sure what the minimum is. I know Ecotech is picky about group buy information going public, at least according to threads that I have read.

AJ you must have gotten those pumps for about $100. That is amazing, never seen a price like that... no wonder it was so cheap. It is nice that you got them fixed for so cheap though. That is basically new pumps by the sound of it.

No, not quite that good of a deal, but I did get them for considerably less that what I've seen most of them sell for...but once the repair was done...it was just an OK deal.  Nothing to write home about.  And I know you saw this particular deal...in fact, I believe that you PMd the guy about them according to the thread on RC.  I'm assuming you have the same avatar on RC as you do here, right?

Well, unless I would be the factor of whether we do a group buy or not (which it doesn't sound like we have interest for 10 units yet?) I will probably just go with my own source. I would still be saving $20 that way, i figure i might as well.

I would guess we are really close to 10 units, weather they all have to be mp40's is the question. I would make a actual topic in the fourm somewhere, and see if people are intrested. People just aren't seeing this maybe and not chiming in on a group buy. Looks like theres about 5 people already wanting them. So you will be close soon.

Yes we can mix or match, If there is enough interest I can start a new thread. Only bad thing is I was planning on the Spring Fest in May so he can do once shipping.

    10+ (Mix & Match)

    MP40W – $360/ea

    MP20W – $250/ea

    MP10W – $170/ea
