I'm gonna be honest. I grew up with guns. I am not afraid of guns. I killed my first deer when I was 12. But guns are no longer a part of my life and they won't be again until the zombie apocalyse happens. I know that this is the off topic forum, but do we really have to go that far off topic. This is a pretty heated and divisive topic.

I browsed this forum last night and I was honestly taken aback by the open discussion of guns, ammo, and the potential killing of folks, so much so that I'm seriously considering no longer being an active member of this club. If this is something folks are going to discuss openly here, that's you're perogative, but it makes me more than uncomfortable.

I know the offending thread has been closed down and I thought about saying nothing, but I woke up this morning and it was still on my mind, so here we are.

I've enjoyed my time and most of the folks I've met in this club, but if this continues, I might have to be done.

thats kind of what i was thinking. I can see a big political debate about to form and a thread being locked.

I agree to some extent with what you said. From what I've seen it appears to have been the same individual posting about guns, ammo, etc. I think there are a lot better forums to post things of that nature. I come to this site for the intended purpose and not to talk about other things that I enjoy doing such as hunting, fishing, shooting, woodworking, camping, etc. With that said, I don't feel the need to abandon ship due to the gun threads. If you feel uncomfortable about any thread you have the option of not reading it.

Yeah, I started another thread, I know. I considered other means of letting my feelings be known, but I thought it best to put it out there.

I honestly felt threatened by the threads when I started considering attending club functions with people who have discussed who to kill first, whether to open carry or conceal their weapons, etc. And then I thought about stuff like letting people into my home. That's why I'm considering leaving the club.

In a country where 20+ elementary kids were shot and killed at school just a few months ago, I don't think we should be joking about shooting people anywhere, at anytime, in any venue. Or carry guns around for the heck of it either, concealed or openly.

Lock the thread if need be. I decided I had to say my peace openly on the forum that offended me.

As for sports: West Virginia University, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Yankees.

Hi dead fish, that thread really did get out of hand I totally agree with you, but it really was one dude that took it to the extreme it went to.
Please reconsider your decision for possibly leaving the site and not renewing your membership, as you know, there are a lot of good people here.

+1 to what daalbers says. You can't tell anyone in the real world not to talk about something why do it here. As long as no one is getting hurt and no threats are made (any more /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/sad.gif ), then you shouldn't tell people to talk about a hobby of theirs. They also say that video games, and television kill people, not that I agree, but if your using the fact that guns kill people as the reason to not allow talking about it, then you have to take away everything that is said to kill people.

Dead fish I do agree with you that I will not support this group as long as childish things are being done, and we all know what thread it was. Maybe if there weren't any active girs members involved in it, it would change my opinion but there were. My final thoughts is that there needs to be a new rule when signing up to be a member, that you will not participate in a thread like that. Not because it was about guns, because of everything else, but once it got out of hand all girs members should be warned about continue participation and punished if they did not listen.

I agree with most everyone else...if you do not like threads about guns, do no create a thread about guns. Seems pretty obvious to me. I, along with the majority of america disagree with your view dead fish, but I'm not going to get on a fish forum and rant and argue with you about the subject. Personally, I don't know why we even have an off topic forum. I come on here to learn about and discuss reefkeeping. If I want to talk about something completely different, I will go to a site related to that subject.

I think anti-gun talk is useless... I mean if someone wants to murder someone, they WILL find a way.
I don't own any guns, don't plan on it... unless the gov is going to start banning guns, then I will buy those guns. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

OK. I'll jump in. I know people that own guns, and they have training and shoot them at shooting ranges. They use different security systems in their homes, and are very safe about the gun operations. They never show their gun to anyone, and they keep quiet about it. They use them has protection, some for hunting, and others for target shooting. I consider these people very sane and trustworthy.

I agree with a lot of posts above that state things like the one right above this. If someone wants to commit a crime, they don't need a gun to do it. While a gun can give someone distance from a target, most of the horrific ones at schools, movie theaters, and so forth that we have heard of, were up close and personal. Similar effects could have been done with home-made pipe bombs, or chemical bombs that honestly, are way too easy to find information about online.

I am not saying that if someone is opposed to guns that they can't voice their opinions. That is only fair in my book, and I also agree that while starting a gun thread about too many gun threads is odd, dead fish in my book is still entitled to do so in an off-topic section of the forums.

Now, I am not going to say, for obvious reasons, if I own a gun or not. Do NOT make assumptions either way because you most likely are wrong. I just know that my family has extra levels of protection in place in our house to deter criminals. Whether or not it is a gun, in my opinion, is nobody's business but my own.

Now, if I wanted to talk about sport shooting (target) or hunting and such, that would be different. But anyone who uses a gun for protection only should show some level of itellegence and maturity in not blabbing about it online. Just my opinion.

The last time I read that thread there was one person whos comments that made me think the club had an obligation to alert authorities. When re read I believe the poster was being sarcastic, but sarcasm is very difficult to type, and given the totality of the posters comments it made me very uncomfortable as well.
I've been a member for 2 years, it seems like about once a year there is a confrontational member, who feels they are being picked on then decides to make aggressive and stupid comments to other members. Be it guns, quarantine, ich, filtration or whatever.
It's hardly a systemic, club wide problem and the topic of the post is irrelevant. Last year a thread about UV Steralizers led to a threat to rip somebody's tounge out.
