Since my clowns have started spawning I figured I'd better get some rotifers and that means having phyto, so I started out with some of the aqua-tech brand that Craig carries at his shop. I used a couple droppers of Schultz plant food, a cfl in a trouble light and wahlah! I know that places that sell this put it in a centrifuge to concentrate it. Any guesstimates as to what density a home culture like this would run?

You need a sedgwick rafter slide to truely look at density numbers and those are a couple hundred bucks a peice. So, probably not route your gonna go, otherwise just look at darkness to determine your density. (guesstimating of course)... that's PLENTY dark to split a culture though. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

However, I would strongly caution you on your choice of fertilizer...take it from me this is very important. YES schultz plant food will grow it, so will miracle grow as well... BUT.... ****IT IS NOT NUTRIENT DENSE ENOUGH FOR BABIES***** I have grown with both liquid plant formula and guillards F2 formulas (you can get cheaper off name brand formula's- I use Fritz with 2 parts A & B...lasts longer if you don't use too much at a time, better shelf life), and although they both grow just fine, even get nice dark cultures... the actual nutrient content is incredibly low with plant fertilizers... you can lose a lot of babies that way. (trust me, I learned the hard way on that one).

Just a word of caution, from someone who had to learn the hard way. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

yeah no problem, we specifically chose a product that had the vitamins and minerals already separated, otherwise its a much shorter lifespan on the product. If your not using it up pretty quickly the it will just spoil on you. Fritz offers it in part A and B so does a couple of other companies... that was just the cheapest one (especially if you can get your LFS to order it in on their regular shipments).

As long as your not feeding babies rotifers fed off of your current live stuff already you should be able to keep the algae alive with you current fertilizer until then though. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif
