Back to work today, so I thought I would share my thoughts about this years MACNA

I thought it was incredible, but I was actually able to enjoy it for once since I was only there as an attendee.

I listened to a ton of lectures, that is where you really learn the most. The speakers I saw this year was

    Tony Vargas

    Matt Wittenrich

    Kevin Kohen

    Matt Wandell

    Craig Bingman

    Jake Adams

    Martin Moe

    Mark Callahan

    Vincent Challias

    John Coppolino

    Scott Fellman (spoke with larangytis)

    Joe Yaiullio

The key note speaker was RIchard Pyle (Pylie Angelfish, Dr Suess Fish etc)

I saw a ton of new products, several I will bring into the store.

First is micro grazer. It is a good that slips onto a suction cup ring in your tank all day. It is soft kind of like playdoh. I saw it in several booths tanks and the fish were hitting it all day long.

Second is a Jellyfish tank. It is an all in one system that displays jellyfish. Really cool and retails for about $1300.

There were a ton of people there. I know there were some more Iowa people, but I never ran into them. The show floor was huge and people everywhere.

Richard Ross put on truly an incredible show at the banquet. He balance on a piece of wood that was wobbling on a pcv pipe, on a table, and juggled knives. It was both comical and entertaining.

I saw a multi chip at Bud & Andy's booth that was incredible!

Next year is in Denver, and I urge all of you to go. It is truly a reefing mecca!

I will probably add many items as I remember them.

Talk to Seachem who is coming to fall fest. They have an anti parasite medicine (Ich) that when mixed with a binder and food can be fed to the fish in a reef tank. They send me home with a few samples so I am going to experiment with it as soon as I have an opportunity.

Can you explain the micro grazer a bit? Is it intended as a food source if you're going to be gone a few days or something?

Your fish has very small stomachs, they are used to eating all day instead of once a day.

This will last your fish all day, giving them the food they need all day, instead of one shot. I saw wrasses, angels, and tangs picking at them.

Interesting. Is this a proven concept, or something new? I'm just curious if you have to worry about excessive nutrients leeching into the water column.

  6. Awesome, very interested in the grazer. Let us know when you get some in the store!

It really shouldnt add any more waste as it doesnt dissolve in the water, just gets eaten by the fish.

They sent me back with a trial package, so I am going to try in the store this weekend and order some for sale next week.

It is a pretty cool product. I have seen picky fish be very pleased with it. If you dont put it on the suction clip, and let it fall to the bottom, fish will still chase and fight for it. It is supposed to be formulated or prepared to last all day in your tank for grazing (if it lasts that long) then you are supposed to remove any remaining food. They make other foods as well, they are all prepared in a special way, im sure craig can fill you in. Apparently this food "ring" along with the other food lines are being used in some Commercial Aquariums.

I have used the Marine Grazer, and it is a very good product. I had a filefish that only ate frozen, but after offering the Marine Grazer he then started to eat pellets. The only con I see is that it can fall relatively quickly from the suction cup.
Craig, which of the lectures did you enjoy the most?

too hard to pick just one.

Jake Adams is running coral tanks with no live rock and no fish with very good results.

Breeding by Martin Moe & Matt Wittenrich are always favorites of mine.

The key note speaker Richard Pyle was awesome!

The grazers are a product that has been around the UK for years and years!!!! It is something that New Era has started distributing recently!

Great product that was released last year at MACNA in Dallas for US Distribution.

MACNA this year was great and I learned a lot from the speakers as well along with some new controller options on the horizon! Along with the AI Hydra 52 that should hit shelves come this November.

I would second all of that! I loved MACNA this year! (it certainly didn't hurt being on the beach though! lol).... as for the grazers by new era, I would second them as well... got a sample and was sad to see it gone so fast, but thrilled that it worked so well and that there was no waste or nutrient spike to speak of!

OH AND PS.... FOR THOSE WANTING TO GO TO MACNA THIS NEXT YEAR, FULL ACCESS PASSES ARE ONLY $89 BUCKS UNTIL OCTOBER 1ST!!! We will be driving to Denver next year! Hope to see others there as well!
