Came home today with a couple new fish. One being a powder blue tang. He was put into a bucket with the water he came in and over the course of an hour+ added 4-5 medium cups of water out of my tank to acclimate and he just started swimming upside down and on his side wildly and darting around like he can't control himself. Any ideas what is going on? I am afraid this poor guy is dieing and I have no idea why, or what I can do. I've only added a little water from my tank in acclimation

is it possible there was something previously in the bucket that he's reacting to?

Bucket has only been used for water changes and fresh RO water. Could be oxygen maybe... but he was only bagged maybe 2 hours from fish store home. I can put an air stone in

I did some googling and came up with all sorts of things that people in similar situations thought that the cause was. From ich, gill flukes, stress, to swim bladder issues.

Hopefully he is going into a quarantine tank where he has a little more room. Definitely shouldn't go into the display tank, especially since something isn't right and we are dealing with an ich prone tang.

The above ideas could be right on the mark to and getting it into quarantine will help with that too.

Something that I came across in two different situations was the use of canned peas of all things to help with the swim bladder. Not sure of the full details, but here is a direct copy/paste quote (with its grammar and spelling errors left intact) from someone named fishfan12 over at aquariumadvice.com

"i have actually had this happen to one of my fish. the trick is to buy a can of peas. now isolate the fish, in a breathable container inside the aquarium. if u get one of those plastic bowls that float and fill it with water that will work. now to you must peel the pea. the salt is only making things worse so stop with that. after the fish has eaten, one pea per 2 inches of fish. you must sink the fish to increase pressure on it. that will allow the swim bladder to unflate."

    Good luck!

Came across the same thing Nick. Yes. He is staying in QT and out of the display tank until he is better(hopefully!)
