  1. So a little tank background before I get into it, I apologize in advance for the lengthy post!

58 gallon oceanic display, 40 B sump/fuge downstairs. Running carbon and a Reef Octopus nwb-150 skimmer

Params are as follows: Nitrate 0, Nitrite 0, Ammonia 0, Ph 8.1, Kh 6.5, Ca 420 and salinity at 1.024

Cycle ended November 22nd, all fall fest coral previously in quarantine went into the DT on the 23rd and were doing well. 1 firefish went in on the 28th, and all coral were displaying excellent extension. Here is where I believe things went awry, I repeatedly rinsed and added 15 pounds of Caribsea Geo-Marine Cushed Coral to the sump for extra filtration and copepod safe haven. No immediate effects, but a day or two later hammers were shrunken and sps extension were non-existant. Next to go bad were softies, shrunken and droopy. also have not seen any signs of copepods since caribsea sand went in.

Black friday fish shipment came in from Bluezoo mid-crisis, tomini tang, starry blenny, watchman goby, pistol and fire shrimp along with a large plate coral whose polyps have only made an appearance once for several minutes after a feeding. At this point all pricey corals went back into quarantine, only to worsen their condition, both hammer's polyps appeared to be melded together and droopy. Pistol shrimp died and fire shrimp molted.

I finally connected all of this to the added crushed coral and removed it, followed by a 20 gallon water change. A day later softies are open for the first time since ad doing well, however SPS and LPS remain closed with the exception of one millepora branch extending sporadically for short periods of time.

Oddly enough my two acan colonies are the only corals to appear unphased throughout the entire disaster. Can anyone provide any insight as to what may have happened or what I should try to do?? Planning on doing another large water change when Red Sea salt shipment gets in. All input appreciated!

I think after removing the crushed coral alot of wchanges are your best friend. For the future tho, throw any new substrate or rock in a 18gallon tote or whatever you have laying around. Throw a powerhead and heater in there and leave it alone to cycle first. As far as time i wait a few months before adding the new stuff. That way i know its cycled through. Thats what ive done with success.

Is your alkalinity always that low? Any type of alkalinity swing along with adding and removing substrate and moving new corals in and corals from qt. Sounds like everything is in shock. Definitely keep up on water changes and let stuff settle in. What's the dhk on your newly mixed saltwater and ph and temp. Try and get your alkalinity above 7. I run mine around 9. If you do adjust parameters do it slow. Like over a few weeks so everything adjusts.
    Hope that helps.

+1 on alk, also just because the tank "cycles" isn't a green light to add 4 fish + corals. Add a fish, a few frags and wait a few weeks. If all good, then add a few more. Nothing good happens fast in this hobby. I assume your running a RO/DI for water treatment? Slow down a bit and you'll be good.

Agree on the Alk. I would also bump the SG up to 1.026. How are you maintaining your Alk/Ca?

Only raise alk by 0.5 pr day though. Best way at this time is via water changes tho. Salinity you can raise with PWCs also. Mix in higher salinity water over a couple changes, this will do both. Then adjust alk up with dosing if needed. I would keep it at 9 to 11. Keep it stable. Also what is your magnesium at?
