I bought a used set-up.  It came with a BlueLine 70 pump.  The pump was plenty powerful when it was in the sump, directly underneath the tank.  However, I have it run into the basement and it just isnt enough.  I only need like 15 feet of lift but would like alot of flow as my intention is a reef.  Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thanks,

Remember, you don't want a ton of flow going through your sump and overflow. I'm not sure on the exact numbers but if you keep the flow low it will be more quiet, as in no loud overflows and your skimmer will have more time to skim the water going through the system.

Ideally, your flow should be run off a separate pump for redundancy.

Also another thing to remember, all pumps are not pressure rated and are not intended to be used for large head applications.

I had a Blueline HD 40 and it was more than enough powerful to feed my tank from my basement as well as provide flow for my frag tank which was also in the basement.

Ok, update. I think something is wrong with the pump. It is making a grinding noise. I am going to investigate. Anyone know anything about these?

I know grinding is not good. Take the pump housing apart and check the magnet. It should be pretty obvious from there, those pumps are simple to work on.

I have taken the pump apart twice. I cant find anything that looks out of the ordinary and if I run it dry it sounds fairly quite but then it grinds hard when I run water through it. Ok, heres what I am thinking. Someone help me with a reccomendation for a new one. I will work on this but in the meantime I need to replace this so I have a back=up anyways.

I use a Dart on my mothers Koi pond. Seems like a good reliable quiet pump.

Ok, My advise would be to get a return pump that will provide just enough head pressure to satisfy your needs from your sump to your display. don't try to force your return pump to create flow in your main display too, you will spend alot of money and electricity and still won't be happy. You would be better off if you got a smaller pump thats just big enough to get the job done for your sump, and spend your hard earned money on getting some prop pumps to put in your display... ex- Vortech or Tunze.
This is my 2 cents hope it helps!
