i have a neon dottyback that has been ripping my new snails out of there shells that i just purchased from reefcleaners....i understand that it has takin a few days for them all to become not dormant from shipping....but he was ripping them out before they had a chance...everything i see says they are reef safe...but yet they are carnivores and i dont know that maybe i should expect some of this activity....it is a fairly expensive fish compared to the snails....it is in an undersized tank for its species... i have also had many hermits and an emerald deshelled i guess by this fish.... what should i do?... sell it or live with the circumstances.....all input will be helpful thanks

ive had 3 different species at various points and my strawberry and sunset regularly went after snails and alot of hermits, on the other hand my yellow/pink seems to leave them alone for the most part with the exception of a few. Im not too sure about the emerald-kinda big, unless it was a smaller one. Try to find some bigger crabs at a LFS and it will possibly leave them alone, but most likely will go for some when they have a hankerin' for a little crab or escargo if there are small ones around, worth it tho they are pretty fish!

I have a dotty back, not sure of the variety, but it is not picky when it comes to eating. Bristle worms, shrimp and snails have all been fair game. About the only thing I haven't seen it go after are the hermit crabs. Of course they do sometimes disappear but I don't know for sure who the culprit is.
