I stole the line from JB in the Enough is Enough posting but it's a valid point.  Is there a list of corals that we newbies should avoid?  I knew about aiptasia but the Kenya is new to me.  I'm sure there are others that should be treated like the plague but don't yet know about.  Is there a website we can go to?

I think avoid is maybe the wrong word. If you're doing an all softie tank, or a low-light tank, then these are great corals, but I will never again put them into a LPS/SPS tank...

    The worst:

Kenya Trees - Grow Super Fast, "Self Frag" and spread like mad, impossible to remove.
Green Star Polyps (or "GSP") - Grow super fast and impossible to remove.
Mushrooms - Many varieties, but especially the purple and purple/green striped, blow all over the tank and end up everwhere stinging corals.

    Not quite so bad:

Yellow Polyps - Also difficult to remove.
Anthelia - Another fast growing softie

    Honorable mention:

Pulsing Xenia - Fast growing and migrates all over the tank. It's cool pulsing is it's only redeeming quality, but you'll never see the pulse if you have much flow.

Interestingly I am unable to keep GSP. It always does for me! LOL.

I agree with JB, those are pretty much the ones /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif I sort of hate the mushrooms and ricordia I once thought was cool.......if you're going to do them in a mixed tank (not recommended) put barriers around them. I have frogspawn and some monti cap surrounding the anthelia, so it has no where to spread to. Kenya tree should be called the devils tree though because it has the little trees that break off and float all over the tank, landing where they may and growing :s

Rics are fine. They grow slow enough that they really don't cause huge amounts of problems. Discosoma and Rhodactis mushrooms are awful though. Basically, unless it is a Ricordea I won't go near mushrooms. Blue Clove Polyps deserve a place on this list. The broadcast spawn like crazy and will end up all over your tank. Most things are able to out compete them, but that doesn't mean they won't reach plague like levels.

That's what matters!  I still think xenia is cool because it moves on its own and I still like anthelia.  All the *bad* coral have their place and in the right setting can be pretty/cool.  These beautiful blue mushrooms I got were my first coral and got me hooked on the hobby /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif
