    Hello Everyone!

My name is Shannon and I am a Biolgy/Chemistry teacher in Boone. I am starting a new class this year at the high school, Marine Biology. I'm starting with a very small budget and almost no supplies. Right now, I have a 30 gallon tank and a 10 gallon. I also have lights for the 30, but, I need to mount them. I could really use any help (free or cheap) in regards to supplies for this class.

I have experience in coral propagation and raising marine life. I worked for a company for two years that did both propagation and breeding of fish. My intent is to teach my students about this, as well. I will be allowing them to view different types of marine life and try their hands at coral propagation.

Right now, I am looking for a larger tank (at least 100 gallons) for the students to use and learn from. I need the tank, stand, and all supplies. I also need live rock, sand, and animals. I could also use filtration for the smaller tanks and lighting for the 10. If you or someone you know is willing to help out a beginning class, I'd love to hear from you! Thanks!!!!

Good to see you make a post Shannon. - This is David btw, we spoke about this via e-mail. - Great to see you getting the program started and hopefully we'll be able to help you out.
I'll work on getting a home page announcement out about your program and what you are needing and we'll see what we can do to get you a tank.

There is a very easy and possible way to get this tank. The likeliness of this happening is like winning the lottery but still possible.

If the counter on the front page is correct there are 1415 or so paying members to girs. Lets say half of them donate $5 dollars. (which if one person says they can not afford this or any BS, JUST DON'T) That would be roughly $3535. Which Could go towards lets say buying a already complete set up like http://www.greateriowareefsociety.org/Forums/tabid/78/aft/30905/Default.aspx

or maybe you want the experience of starting completely fresh, you could just as easy go towards brand new things. Since this is for "charity" I'm sure curtain vendor connections girs has, could get discounted items. Companies love to brag about giving to charity almost as much as they love when someone spends $3000. lol. As a community we can select curtain people to pick the right items so we all know what our money is going to.

Lets say this happens with some donations, this could be a coral tank were girs members could get different corals for cheaper then they normally would. Which in turn would help pay for the tank. It would be limited per person and what not.

Again most people would gladly speed thousands of dollars on their own fish tank but would never think twice of donating a couple dollars for some one else, but if this happens to spark something then it is worth the post.

That's wonderful, David! Thank you so much! At this point, anything anyone can do to help would be awesome. DJ, I LOVE that idea! I am not sure how to work it that way, but, I'm sure I can find someone who does! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif Thanks for jumping in there with ideas! This is a really exciting thing to bring to Boone.

Ahhh, that's so cool!! I wish my high school would have been willing to do something like this. Instead, we had a 10 gallon aquarium with two bluegill in it. NO FUN! Lol, I'd be more than happy to donate some cash to see this program get started up! It'll be a good way to educate people (kids) on how important marine life is to the planet as well as how ecofriendly the hobby has become over the years. I love it!!! Props, Shannon!!

Another thing my kids could use are books. I won't have textbooks per se. Everything will be supplemental materials. But, some books to use as references would be a great help!

I think all members would be willing to help. Paid members or regular members.

I can get books and other educational tools from central campus. Will update what I can get.

Girs could also use this as some good publicity for the club and the hobby. Anyone know someone who works for the paper? lol

I think the thing we are waiting for now is for a donation button, hopefully we have someone who could set one up.

David, I think you will be pleasantly surprised about how many members WILL help the Marine class in Boone!!/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif One thing that should be looked at is having the donations given as a tax deduction. My financial contribution to CC was rather large and I was given written documentation from CC for tax purposes. Whether it be monies, rock, livestock, equipment or what-not, it can add up quickly for those who will fully support the class. I'm in/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/satisfied.gif

Another thing that might be helpful is for a member or two to become the go-to persons' for Shannon. This will help when situations arise whether it be a need (speaker for presentations, planning, problem-solving, emergencies, etc) or an update for members. Shannon will have her hands full...over-full actually/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/hehe.gif

Nick (and Chris) can be of great help by linking Shannon and Kirk up :0) Kirk might be able to help by sharing course outlines, lesson plans, materials, etc...? I know when I was teaching, there were very long and late hours involved...../DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/ermm.gif Reinventing the wheel doesn't sound like a good idea especially with quality prgram that CC has!

As with any new undertaking, a solid support-base is needed. I think GIRS and its members can fulfill that need as long as there is a firm comittment! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/unsure.gif Maybe, just maybe, we could get enough money raised to where a couple (business) Member-Sponsors could build a large acrylic tank?... Where a member stand/cabinet builder could make the stand and /or canopy?... Just brainstorming here.... Or, maybe someone has a large tank to donate, sump, lighting, skimmer (or at cost), etc....

Let's see what can happen rather quickly because August will be here before we know it!!/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/crazy.gif

Oh my goodness! I am overwhelmed at the generosity that is already being shown! I really appreciate how quickly people are jumping on board with this! I wanted to say, I have already been in touch with Kirk and Jerry at Central Campus. I spent a day with them and their students. I was SO impressed with what they have going on out there! It's absolutely amazing!

Sponge, you have some FANTASTIC ideas! I did get a copy of the curriculum that Jerry uses. As my class will not be associated with DMACC like theirs, I will have to make some adjustments, but, it's a great starting point! I've also looked at curriculum from other schools across the country.

I have contacted my principal about how to go about taking in the donations. I know that anything and everything has to be run through our CFO. I will speak with her on Monday about how to set things up, particularly for tax purposes. I had thought about this, previously, I just didn't know how much sponsorship I would even get.

Also, I had a couple of questions raised about what happens to the tanks during the summer. The two smaller tanks, I would likely break down partially and set up at home for the summer as I have done the past three years with my freshwater tanks. The large tank would have to be maintained. Schools don't really close for the summer, particularly high schools. I would have access any and all times I needed it. I would also have a select few students who would be scheduled to do maintenance on the tank(s) throughout the summer. For cooling, my classroom will have its own heating/cooling set-up, I can work something out with the maintenance department to ensure the room stays cooler than the rest of the building, OR, I can have a cooling unit installed for the tank. I also intend to take the tank to minimal animals for summer by either selling or giving the animals to someone for keeping during the summer. It really depends on where we are in regards to animals at that point.

I am truly excited and overwhelmed with gratitude towards everyone who is getting on board with this! My goal is to have everything purchased by the end of this month so I can start in July getting things set up and begin establishing the bacteria base in the tanks. I will know for sure on Monday how to go about setting up a donation process. Thank you to everyone!

I have a 180 gallon reef ready tank that I will donate if you can verify it is for the school. No stand and it needs some clean up, but does not leak. Just have to come get it. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif Can also throw in some dry man made rock that has been cured.

Softie and THinktank, I talked with my principal, earlier. On Monday, I will put in a call to our CFO to find out how we do all of this legally. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif I don't have the authority to say, "Sure! I'll take it!" Not without their approval. We have to set up an account and forms to do this with. I will DEFINITELY keep in touch, though! I can check into a stand, as well. Does anything come with the tank? I know you said it's a reef, but, are you talking filtration and such, too? Thanks!!!

It is only the tank. No lid or sump or pump or anything. It is reef ready, meaning (in this case) that it has two installed corner overflows for you to install your plumbing in.

That's great Shannon that you have linked with Kirk and Jerry! Getting curriculum is half the process!

Sponge! That's awesome! You are really on top of things! I had a running list in my head. I just hadn't written anything down. A truck was on that list. LOL! I have an Expedition that I could lay the seats down in, I just wasn't sure if it is quite big enough. I will be calling the school CFO tomorrow to find out how to do all of this legally. As I said before, right now, I only have a 30 gallon with stand and lights. Anything and everything is wonderful that could be donated. I can pay for some things, too. I have also made a deal with a local pet shop to get things for wholesale prices. As soon as I talk with the CFO tomorrow, I will update the page here so we can continue this! Thanks, everyone!!! My kids will be thrilled!
