Let me know what supplies you need. I have accounts with BRS, premium aquatics, champion lighting & supply, marine depot (NAWS), etc. also I have over 600 lbs of dry rock, I would be willing to part with certain pieces cheap. Also might have an algae scrubber to donate as soon as I get caught up with other ones I have been meaning to donate!

Thanks, Turbo! My plan is to have as much purchased as I can by the end of the month. At least I want to get the equipment. I'll start setting up, adding sand and rock in July, and then, right before school starts, add just a few animals. I will definitely keep you in the loop regarding the supplies I need!

I do have a retro Coralife light that's 6' long. It has 3 150W metal halides and 96w compact flor's. I'm not sure that it would provide enough Par or spread in a 180. I will donate that also if it will work on whatever tank is gotten. It fits inside a canopy so... Maybe could add some supplemental lighting to it? Those with more expertise with lighting might be able to figure that one out! I went through my stash today and found some things (heaters, pump-haven't checked yet to see if they are working, test kits, stc).

Hopefully there will be more people getting on the bandwagon here Shannon...weekends at this time of year, well, for that matter, it just being (almost) Summer slows the activity on GIRS....

Ok, Everyone. I just got off the phone with the CFO at our school. We use a system called RevTrak for our online payments. They are setting up an account specifically for the Marine Biology program. She said she will let me know as soon as it is live and I can post the link, here. Also, there is a form you can fill out that the school system will verify for donations. I just got some REALLY exciting news! Central Campus is donating TWO 200 gallon tanks with stands and one with a hood!!!!! I'm so excited!!! Now, I just need a few strong backs (other than my draftee husband and 14 year old twin boys) and a truck to get them with. I guess I will spend the rest of my summer accumulating things to add to the tanks. I will certainly need filtration, algae scrubbers, lights, rocks, animals, etc. Please let me know if you need any more details. I really appreciate all of the offers of help and advice so far! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/w00t.gif

I'll throw my 2c in here for what I think you should have for filtration:

    Tank #1

Algae Scrubber (if one of mine, probably an L4)
Skimmer (moderate size: my favorite is the Reef Octopus brand, NW-150 is a great size, could go bigger, but really don't need to IMO until you get some really heavy SPS)
Carbon dosing via Hans Werner Boling method (Murray Camp spoke about this method, I'll get more info)
Small carbon reactor (change carbon weekly, use very small amount)
Sump with split intake: some goes through filter socks -> skimmer -> scrubber -> return, some goes to live rock refugium -> return

    Tank #2

    Filter socks
    Larger skimmer
Carbon dosing system via Biopellets, I recommend using the Werner Marine biopellets as they are FDA approved
    Carbon & GFO/Phosblast/etc
Refugium with chaeto and other macro algae, etc, maybe some mangroves

Just a few thoughts. I think those are 2 slightly different approaches, and you could do several studies about which version is overall more or less effective, etc.

As for lighting, I would recommend a mixture of T5HO actinic and LEDs. I am currently of the opinion that LEDs alone are not adequate - they give you a lot of "punch" and can save on energy and lamp replacement, but they aren't a full replacement for what you get out of some of the quality actinic lamps.

I just got word that the donation site is up and running. Here is the link: http://boone.revtrak.net/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=jnlpfpi4
All you have to do is put in your amount and the specify it is for Marine Biology. Otherwise it goes into a general fund. Follow the steps and make the donation!

Thanks, Turbo! Can you get me an estimated cost on those items? I really need to start making purchases. I may have a source for lighting. I'm checking into it. I would definitely like a refugium. The tanks I worked with in the past had one and I thought it was a great idea. I know a lot has changed in the 15 years (MAN that makes me feel OLD!) since I worked with marine life, but, I'm willing to learn all over, again. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

Well, what you can get also depends on what you have the capability to use - mainly, what sump you will be running, clearance under the tank (if the sump is under the tank), etc....If your sump is remote from the tank, there is more flexibility. But I'm guessing that space will be a concern, so the sump will be under the tank.

Pics of the setups that CC is donating might help.

Hi Everyone! It has been suggested I give you guys a list of exactly what I need and a time frame for it. I'm still working on the "list" of wants/needs. I can tell you, I would like to get all of the equipment in place by the end of June. I don't want to start putting animals in until the end of July, first of August. About the middle of July, I would like to start putting everything together and get some sand and rock in the tanks. I can get into the building any time I need to, so, I may do some Saturday work days because I'll be doing a research program at for three weeks in July. Also, if you would like the forms for donations for IRS purposes, you can contact Paulette Newbold at Boone Schools 515-433-0750. Press 3 for the Superintendent's office and ask for Paulette. She can help you from there.

So, now that I have the tanks coming, I guess the first thing I need is filtration an RO system and lights. I'm thinking that I would like to do identical set-ups as far as filtration, algae scrubbers, water, etc. I would like to have two different types of lighting. Then, I would like the kids to research what types of lights work better. So, I'm thinking of setting up one tank with LEDs and one with actinics. Any suggestions?

I am also wanting the kids to learn about breeding. I'd like to get a couple of breeding pair of clowns. I also want them to work on propagating corals. I'd love to be able to sell the corals and fish to put money back into the program. I know those are big goals and will take time to get established, but, that's what I'd like to see in the next few years. I welcome any and all input, help, donations, advice, guest speakers... I'm thrilled with everyone's helpfulness, so far!!!

I almost forgot! One other thing I'd like to do is have a running brine shrimp hatchery going. I know I'll need supplies for that, too. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

Here's some of the more popular businesses that reefers use online Shannon. Some of the businesses may donate or provide the equipment at cost... Also, some of the GIRS sponsors provide discounts. See here as an example:http://www.greateriowareefsociety.org/Forums/tabid/78/aft/29306/Default.aspx

    Air, Water and Ice
    Bulk Reef Supply
    Dr's Foster & Smith
    Marine Depot
    Reef Geek
    Premium Aquatics
    Sunlight Supply
    Marco Rocks
    Salty Supply
    Aquarium Guys

Many reefers will make their rocks...it might be a fun project if you could round up a bunch of students! It definitely would be much cheaper than buying!

Can you give us an idea about how much money you are trying to get? I know your costs will be ongoing but what you need to get you started might help :0)
Also if you could give us updates on how much money has been donated, might help too :0)

Thanks, Sponge!! Railcar, you are in SD? I just found out I need to spend a certain amount by 06/24 that's been budgeted to me. I'm wondering if anyone is willing to sell organisms and then keep them until I can get them in the beginning of August?
