DJ- thanks for that link plug on my tank. I would be most willing to help out, we could drop our price on the tank and sell it to her discounted (I would have to talk the price over with the husband) I wish I could just flat out donate it, but money's too tight (our daughter ended up being in the nicu, so unexpected bills there!). But we could most certainly work something out! I would absolutely love to help in this way! I could also work on some of this spare equipment I have as well...

Bio teacher, I am up here in ames too, I will send you a message. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

I have been in contact with Shannon almost every day since her first post. Some members are doing their best to help her out with equipment donations , etc. TANK YOU!!
However, there haven't been any financial donations and even a little bit will help her and the students. Everyone knows how expensive this hobby is/can be so just imagine what it is for this school/Shannon/students. She's starting from square one! We know just how much salt costs and just imagine how much salt they will go through having 2 200gallon tanks, a QT, etc! Fish food, test kits, Ca & Alk, and on and on! I'm sure Shannon will come up with ways to fund the ongoing future costs but RIGHT NOW she needs our help!!

As was stated early on, if most members would donate $5/$10 or more, it will DEFINITELY HELP! Just look for the posted link Shannon provided earlier to make your financial donations. If you have rock, sand, salt or anything else that the students/Shannon could use, please pm Shannon or post here :0) Thanks everyone!

I don't know how long it takes to get through the system, but I donated money on Tuesday.

Awesome!!! Thanks for the donations Rocketmann and Danmgray!! That helps a lot with my future planning! I know we will need things during the year, as well! I do have a favor. If you send a donation, would you mind letting me know the amount in a PM? That will allow me to keep a running total to compare to what the school has. Our financial person is AMAZING, but, it never hurts to have a second set of eyes on things! We have whittled my list of needs down. I'll be updating that, soon. Thanks again, everyone!

Well, here goes! I still need:

    2 skimmers

    2 pumps (3,000 gph)

    Salt (remember my "duh!" moment?)

    6 powerheads

    Refractometer

    Crushed coral

    Heaters

    Digital Thermostats

    Refugium lights

    DI Resin

And...of course...live stuff! That's what this is all about, right? /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Did you get a hold of live rock?

Are you wanting crushed coral for a substrate? That's another one of those things that people have been moving away from.

I have had a couple of offers of seed rock. Nothing as far as the quantity I'll need. I've had one offer of some dry rock. I think we had decided on a mix of sand and crushed coral. To be honest, my head's spinning a little. The sand I have is the sugar sized and I don't have enough and I'm afraid it would just be too messy to use in the big tanks with the powerheads and circulators going.

I like special grade reef sand. Its a little coarser and doesn't blow around as easily. But crushed coral is definitely cheaper, and should do just fine mixed with finer material. It will probably separate over time, but I don't think it causes any issues.

Has the school made any commitments to this program? Are they going to support ongoing maintenance costs in the coming years? It seems like a large undertaking for you to be solely responsible for. Hopefully they can also see the educational value, because their support is probably most important to the longevity of the program.

Absolutely they are behind this program! It was my principal's idea to start it based on my past experience. He gave me a small budget that I could have run a couple of small tanks with. When I contacted GIRS, it got a LOT bigger due to the willingness of others to help out so much! My superintendent is excited, supportive, and behind the program, too. Good question, jsprague!/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Good to hear. Are you going to leave room for a frag tank? Could help pay for salt.

I have a 30 gallon I'm going to set up. I'm trying to decided between using it as quarantine or frag.

I'd say quarantine is more important than a frag tank.
