Coke and Pepsi syrup bins are safe to use. Can cut the top off for a lid/easy access if needed. Might want to give them a try :0)

I know I've been updating like mad since I started this thread. However, I had to take a day off, yesterday for my sanity. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/tongue.gif Anyway, I've been back at it this morning making phone calls and sending emails. I just had 100 lbs of dry rock donated. That helps! I still need more. I'm also still on the lookout for protein skimmers, power heads, and lighting for one of the tanks. If you know of some cheap or free, please let me know. Thanks!

My 80? lbs of cured but never used/cycled man made dry rock is yours. I jsut have to figure out a way to get it to you. If anyone there is headed to the QCA/Clinton or if anyone here is headed there (and is willing to transport), please let me know.

If anyone from your neck of the woods is heading to Grinnell, Newton or Des Moines, I'm sure arrangements can be made for Shannon to get the rock!!/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif She definitely needs all the rock she can get! I believe she will have enough for the 180 with the donations from here, including yours, and from Marco Rocks but she will still need more for the 200+ tank! It is SO COOL that Marc from Marco rocks donated!!/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/w00t.gif/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/w00t.gif/DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/w00t.gif We need someone to help get your rock closer! Anyone??!!

Pending on a purchase going through or not, I am out in ames and could head out as far as Cedar Rapids... if someone wanted to meet me, I could bring it back the rest of the way...

But, that is all pending on the person going through with the sale. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif

That's great Jazz! Hope your purchase goes through! So, if Softie's rock can get to Cedar Rapids, looks like we might get more rock to Boone!

Lee had offered to donate some metal halide lighting. Will those work for you?

What date do you have set for having the tanks set up and running so you ensure they are cycled?

At this point, I see that you still NEED: SKIMMERS for a 180 & 220
    POWERHEADS for a 180, 220, 30g
    SALT, prefer Instant Ocean/Reef Crystals
    ROCK
(and Possibly LIGHTING for the 180g?)
to get the tanks running...correct? Am I missing anything that you MUST HAVE RIGHT NOW? Should you NOT get any of these things donated and NOT get any further monetary donations, do you have the money needed to purchase those things? If no, how much money will you need? If you cannot raise it here from GIRS members and non-members, what will you do?

I believe that you are really close to crunch time here for getting the tanks setup, cycled and stocked!

I've had an offer (VERY reasonable) for a Coralife 120 skimmer. I plan on purchasing that. You have the list of what I need correct. I do need the lighting for the 180. I thought I had an offer and I cannot get the person to call or email me back after having made me the inital offer. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/plain.gif The halides will work with the halide setup I currently have. I plan to get those to replace the bulbs in the system that's set up with the 225. I am doing my best to stretch the bit of money I have right now. I will either have to pay for some of the things myself or try to get some more money out of the school board or my principal (doubtful with the new fiscal year, but, all I can do is ask). I do have a little bit left to purchase a little more rock and possibly another skimmer. My biggest, most frightening, major concern is that second set of lights. THAT will be the most expensive thing I need that I just really don't have the money for.

I thought I would clarify that the CoraLife 120 skimmer Shannon plans to buy will be used on the frag tank.

I know I haven't posted in several days, trust me, it's not for a lack of wanting to! I've been busy doing a teacher internship at ISU and it has taken a lot of time. Don't worry, Marine Biology is still in the forefront of my mind. I'm working towards my goals of having the tanks started by August. I had to push it back because donations and funding dried up for a bit. I wanted to have them cycling, right now, but, August will be ok. If anyone knows where I can get lighting for a good price for the 180, please let me know. I might be able to get the skimmers, now. I do have some more funding, as well. I'd really like to get LEDs for the tank, since the other has metal halides, already.

Hi Everyone! It's been a couple of weeks, but, I've been super busy getting stuff ready for school and finishing up something at ISU! I go back to work on the 12th!!! How did that happen??? Anyway, wanted to let everyone know what's going on right now. I have skimmers for the tanks!!! YAY!!! I will also be ordering some lights for the tank I don't have lights for. I need to order salt and still need rock and sand, but, it's really coming together! I'm so excited! A special thanks to Mark (morayeelhead) and Nik (railcar79) for the skimmers! That takes a HUGE stress off of me! I'm looking forward to getting these things up and running and being ready to go. It won't be until after school starts, but, that's ok! I'll have plenty of time to get everything ready for the class. Thanks again, everyone for your support! You've been fantastic! We could definitely still use donations of corals, animals, sand, rock, and monetary ones, as well. I can't wait to post pictures!!!!

Setting them up once class is started is a great way to teach about the nitrogen cycle of the systems.

Can you give us an update Shannon? Do you know how many students are enrolled in the class? When is school starting for you? I know that you plan to integrate the tanks/educational value into your other science classes so maybe you can give us an idea how many students it will actually impact? The more, the merrier :=0) Thank you!

Thought I would just give a shout-out to Reef Medic Clay for his donations to the class today! Thanks Clay!! Clay donated some live rock and rubble, a heater, brine shrimp, tank, a few snails and crabs, and a Clown fish! Also a few corals that are going to need some TLC :0) The first challenge for the students!

I will be heading to Boone in the AM to deliver the donations and a some other things. The 180 g tank is running :0) Thanks to Nick for helping Shannon with plumbing, lighting and getting some flow and a fish (bar goby) in there!! Nick has made several trips to Boone to help out...Thanks Nick!!

The tank is outfitted with MH's and Compact Flo lighting. There is a sump with bioballs. The tank currently has an algae problem as there is no skimmer, scrubber, etc. {Shannon is in the process of developing a formal proposal to the BoD for support, either through equipment/supplies or a financial donation. Hopefully, there will be a donation forthcoming.} I will be taking chaeto tomorrow to help with nutrient control until a skimmer is secured. Other means for nutrient control will be enlisted as necessary. There are several corals in the tank and a few snails, if I remember correctly.

There are still things needed for the class/tanks. Shannon or I will be posting those things soon. In the meanwhile, if you have anything that you'd like to donate post it here or send a pm :0) If you would like to make a cash donation, please feel free to do so using the information provided earlier in this thread by Shannon :0) There is and will be supplies and equipment and, fish and inverts she will need to purchase now and throughout the school year. I have learned just recently that fundraising activities, such as bake sales, car washes, etc. cannot be implemented due to changes in the law. That sucks to put it bluntly so financial donations are and will be needed... Thanks in advance for your generosity and stay tuned for further updates!!
