Thanks, Teri for updating everyone!!! It's been crazy busy! The 180 gallon tank is doing really well! We have an algae bloom going right now, so, we're in the process of getting some snails to put in there and clean it out. My corals are doing beautifully! They are growing like crazy! I am actually going to have to frag a few of them, soon. That's exciting!!! The two fish are doing well, also. I have some tiny starfish and snails working in the tank. I also have copepods and amphipods like crazy! I'm hoping to set up a brine shrimp hatchery, soon.

I have also been gifted a mated pair of clowns!!! I'm so excited! As soon as I have the 30 gallon up and running (hopefully this week!), I'll be getting those clowns in there and I'm hoping they will get acclimated quickly! The kids will be so excited to be raising clownfish! I really appreciate the help and interest in this everyone has shown! It's been amazing.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, donations, offers of help, advice, or anything else! I love hearing from everyone!

Thanks for updates! If there are any members that are getting rid of fish, we just need to try to get them your way!

There is an obvious need for donations still!!!!

Thanks for sharing the pictures Shannon! Some Mexican Turbo snails should help with the hair algae :0) Are you planning to add more rock to the 180g that is pictured above? GIRS members like pictures :0) As Chris noted, donations are needed guys. Fish, snails, Instant Ocean salt, carbon and GFO, carbon/GFO reactors and pumps are needed ...yesterday :0) lol Some of you had indicated early on that you would donate $5 but haven't. Hopefully you can do so now as the need is here guys! $5 doesn't seem like much but it can buy a couple snails :0) Also, Dr's Foster and Smith has a $5 coupon that a customer can get when ordering certain items. Salt is one of those things! If you buy an item or more that qualifies, you will get a $ 5 coupon per qualifying purchase. I ordered 3 boxes of salt and got 3 $5 coupons ) Remember to post here when you send a financial donation so Shannon can make sure that it gets to her class :0)i

I am donating a box of reef crystals, so she will just have to mix it in for water changes. :)

Hi Everyone!!! I hope you liked the pictures. We have algae to work on, again, but, we'll get it taken care of. More importantly...I was just visited by Channel 5 news!!! I applied for their $1,000 grant and they chose me! It will be on Tuesday's news with the big story on at 10:00!

Wow, that's great!! That should really help with your project. I think it's wonderful that you're getting kids interested in marine life. The tank is looking quite nice. The algae phase will pass. You have a lot of knowledgeable people in your area that I'm sure will help you find ways to kick that algae.

I just wanted to take a minute and share with you guys something interesting that happened, yesterday. I was out of the building for the day escorting a senior around ISU as he plans on going into their engineering program. Keep in mind that Marine Biology hasn't technically started, yet. However, my kids have been closely watching the things that I do, the levels I check, and how I fix things. While I was gone, I got an email from a Zoology student. She wanted me to know she thought the temperature was too high and the tank looked "cloudy". I knew exactly what was going on. (Evaporation) I was also contacted by another student who had been checking on things, too. I was able to get in touch with a student, send them to my room to take care of the "problem" (run the R/O unit for a few hours and turn off the lights) and rest assured that the kids had it under control. Otherwise, I would have had to make another trip out to check on things. That made me pretty proud. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif

Way to go Students!!! Sounds like an auto topoff is needed! Evaporation will be on the rise during the winter heating season. There are places online where ATO's can bought and DIY'd pretty cheaply.

Hey GIRS members! Can you give Shannon your experiences with DIY'd ATO's ? Mine are Tunze's so I lack experience in that department /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/sad.gif

Thanks for the info on the auto top offs! That's cool stuff! I now have a few more snails and hope to get quite a few more. The bonded clown fish are settling into the 30 gallon tank I set up and are looking good! The news spot about us airs on Channel 5 tonight at 5:00, 6:00, and 10:00. Be sure to watch!

Hey nice set up! This is the first time I've read all this. I've been away a few months. I was wondering if there was anything that is still needed? Lights? I think I could donate a frag of everything in my tank.

Thanks, guys! Jazz, I appreciate you posting the link. I kept meaning to and just kept stayin busy! I think they did a great job, I'm just really sad they edited out the part where I put in a plug to GIRS! Chris, you have been great and I REALLY appreciate your support! Jstn, I could definitely use some metal halide and actinic bulbs! I'm unsure how old the ones I have are and I think one of the halides is getting ready to go out on me. AND, I would LOVE to have frags! The goal is for the kids to raise them! I also need an anemone for my mated pair of clowns. Right now, I'm noticing a number of aptasia in the big tank. Got to get that taken care of, somehow.
