Hello all. Just a little background about my journey so far...I became interested in this hobby kind of by accident. I strolled into a pet shop out of curosity one day and laid eyes on a Red Emperor Snapper. It was love at first sight and I dove into the world of saltwater to find out what I had to do to take my new found friend home.
Unfortunately I learned very quickly that I did not have the knowledge (or the space!) to care for my dream fish. So I have been researching saltwater tanks for a little over three years then (finally) this last Christmas got my first fish tank, a 55 bowfront.  I purchased all of my supplies online through petco.com and (so far) have 65 lbs of live rock and 60 lbs of sand. I have recently discovered that who ever told me saltwater was a lot of work did not stress IT'S A LOT OF WORK! So here's my dilemma...
My tank was all set up, doing well and then, without notice, I got promoted through work and thought I would be moving about an hour away. So I tore down my tank and put my rock into three large tupperware tubs with heaters, only to find out that the place I was supposed to move got rented out from under me. Since I wasn't able to find a different place to move, I decided to stay where I am and just commute to work. So a little over two weeks after I tore down my tank, I got to put it back together. It is back up and running now with stable water levels. I am worried about my rock though. When I received it from Petco, it had beautiful coloring (greens, yellows, and purple) but now it has very little coloring at all. Literally it looks like dry rock that I just threw in some water. And recently my three hermit crabs have all pasted away when before they had a good amount of algae to munch on.What could be wrong with my rock? Is there anything I can do to get some life back into it? Someone suggested Kent Marine Purple Tech to me, any suggestions?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance [IMG] HRLB

Chances are, the tank is going through (or soon will) another nitrogen cycle. So, you might need to be patient....again !

    btw...I agree snappers are awesome.

    Haley,

I strongly recommend attending as many of our monthly meetings as possible as it is a great way to get advice as well as meet others in the club. Welcome to the hobby!

It sounds like some of the life you had on your rock especially the kinds that need light to survive have died. This is not completely bad but it means there is going to be a lot of dead stuff in your water decomposing. Durring this time, you will not want to put anything in the tank. Like everything in the hobby, it takes time to get back to where you were and the stuff will grow back eventually. I would not recommend dosing or putting anything in the water thinking it will help the rock as it probably won't.
