Need to replace the skimmer on my 75 gal display tank. I've had a 6" diameter Reef Octopus that I've been very happy with - but the pump is on its last leg and can't be replaced. So I'm planning to replace the whole skimmer in the next month or two. Reef Octopus is still tops on my list, but I thought I'd see if anyone has any other recommendtions they think I should consider????

Sca302..."rated" for 180 gallons. I'm sure its not but it'd be plenty for a 75. I'm beyond happy with mine. Dead silent and I have to scrub the cup weekly. Pulls some serious gunk. Plus $150 for brand new one to your door. I also like that the pump is inside of it.

I am big fan of the bubble magus line of skimmers.

I like the space saving design, the fact you can disassemble the skimmer in minutes and clean the entire skimmer body with ease, and the price point really cant be beat.

for a 75 gallon tank I feel a bubble magus curve 5 would fit the bill nicely.

I was a huge fan of reef octopus, and bubblemagus as well... but to be honest, the BEST pump you can buy is a recirculating pump. That is. one with a pump for water, and one for a pump for air.

They tend to be bulkier, but they also tend to be in or out of sump so there's that. I like the hydor series, personally, but run a combo of that and a injection jet skimmer on my main 40/90 combo

You may want to wait for Black Friday to come around before grabbing anything.

Word through the grape-vines is that BRS might be running a 40% off deal on the Vertex Omega skimmers again this year.

I'm on the third manufacturer for my skimmers. High price: Reef Dynamics with Eheim pump. Works well and good price: Reef Octopus. I second to wait for black Friday :0)

Thanks for the replys. I do plan on waiting for Black Friday. Just want to get my decision made before that so that I am ready to pull the trigger when Black Friday sales are announced.

I had looked at the Vertex, since they are reccommended on BRS, but couldn't justify the price differential as compared to the Reef Octopus. So, a large discount might make a difference there. I'll look at the other ones listed as well.

I was thinking the same thing. I have always seen replacement pumps on coral vue 's site. There is another one that sells octopus replacement pumps but can't remember name right now.
What skimmer do you have? Which skimmer?

    Its a Reef Octopus pump - OTP2000.

Honestly the whole thing works great as far as pulling out crap. Couldn't be happier with that aspect (as far as I know). Problem is that it has to be 'primed' to get it to start. Not sure if that is the correct way to say it, but I have to blow into the air tube to get the pump to start.

I bought it used a few years back - if my memory is correct - from Fishbrain. So I don't have any manual on it - and it doesn't list a model number.

I tried calling Caoral-Vue several months back, and they confirmed that the current model of the OTP 2000 won't work on it. The connectors aren't the same and they don't make a conversion kit to be able to connect the new pump to the old skimmer.

    Does this make sense?

Dang. That sucks. Guess you do need a new one. I have also had good experience with reef octopus skimmers. I am no help in recommending a skimmer for a 75 gallon tank. But I just bought a Int5000 reef octopus for my tank and love it. I have also used the Diablo xs160. And worked great they both worked great. Good luck.

Have you tried pulling the pump out and soaking it in vinegar? I've had similar issues in the past and sometimes there is enough calcium build up on the impeller or in the shaft to restrict the spin.

I've had a lot of pumps with issues you're describing and everytime a new impeller fixed it. My recommendation would be to buy a new impeller, if that doesnt work you could look at upgrading the pump. I really like the bubble blaster pumps. Even if it isn't a direct fit it should be able to be retro fitted somehow.

I put a sump on my biocube and run the sca-301 skimmer(smaller model than the pic in second post) and am pretty happy. I remember when I was reading up on them they use a very nice pump(atman brand) and don't over charge on the body. They are the same pump bubble magus uses on some of their skimmers. It works pretty good, I paid $60 on sale.

So I ordered a skimmer today. I ordered the Vertex Omega 150 from BRS. They have a deep discount on it for Black Friday. I hope it works as well as indicated by the reviews!!

It's a bit late to comment but this will be my next skimmer, especially without a doubt if I ever setup a 300. Tony Vargas runs it on his 300 as well.

I picked up the vertex 180i couple weeks ago and love it. Brs even credited my account for the Black Friday price difference of $190 after I told them how sad I was they went on sale 10 days later. Amazing skimmers and at that price for Black Friday there is nothing that even comes close to their performance. Vertex has made a fan with me.
