Hey Craig, have you seen yellow tangs go up in price since the passing of Hawaii S.B. 580 last month?

No it wasn't, it doesn't go into effect until 2016, the ban was amended, but the restrictions still apply.

To be clear, the bill isn't actually a total ban on collection. It puts greater restriction limits on quantity, collection areas and species, and includes a "white list" of animals that are still permissible for collection (which doesn't include yellow tangs).
It's unfortunate, but better management practices could have amended the troubles in Hawaii before it had come to this. The truth of the matter is that the entry fee for collectors has been too low, competition has been too fierce, and collectors have been too confident about their impact.
I believe that in time, modifications will be made to the bill that will include better management of the fishery, perhaps even a state funded hatchery to increase recruitment rates among the most endangered species. Collectors who get involved with such projects will be well poised to accomodate the ornamental industry when the  time comes again.

The Hawaii HB580 Legislation that was proposed earlier this year has been amended. The original bill that was introduced in January 2011 was to prohibit the collecting and selling of aquatic life for aquariums in Hawaii. Thankfully, due to lack of support and other reasons the bill was amended to throw out the ban on the aquarium industry. Instead a new section was added that reads: “”Establishes two new marine life conservation districts on the island of Maui. Requires the department of land and natural resources to report to the legislature every five years, beginning with the regular session of 2013, on the effectiveness of the conservation district designations under this Act. Requires community involvement in the report.
