Just a question, alittle Darwins law kinda idea wont coral adapt and mutate since the change is slow?

The change is not really "slow" the ocean has become more acidic in just the last 15 years, rather alarming actually and more than likely most stoney coral will die before they can adapt /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/hybrid//emoticons/sad.gif

This is not the first report, I'd have to research to research to find the others.  It effects snail/crab shells because of the calcium impact.  By implication that will also impact corals and any other sealife that needs calcium to survive.

It all makes sense. In the last 15 years how much more sea travel has there been? Higher demand for forighn goods, more cruises and yes more accedents(like the Valdeze) So it only makes sense that all of the excess sea travel is have a profound effect on our oceans. The one thing to think about is this: I did read where some of the small reefs are starting to come back. New coral growth and spawing. It is small but it is a ray of hope. There are a few wealthy nature lovers out there that try some new things to help as well. Like the guy that tried to run a monster sized skimmer in the hudson bay. Was stopped beause there was nowhere good to get rid of the skim mate.
While we run into all the bad news on our ocean you can also find things that are being done to help save our oceans. I believe that as time goes on there will become more and more people that will team together to help clean the oceans. As long as people care then there is hope for recovery of our oceans and enviornment. Shaun

It's peoples, like this, unwillingness to accept the truth that we are in this mess in the first place!
"It doesn't matter if I dump this old oil in the ground, whats a little oil going to do??"  Don't be ignorant...
It's very sad people think this way, mostly the United States, but the entire world is to blame.

LOL Now I'm a dirty oil dumper! [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG] Just because I don't trust everything I hear or read dose not mean i go around polluting everywhere I go. And I am not ignorant but you may be a little just to let you know to call someone ignorant is not a insult it just means they lack knowledge in a given subject. Not trying to start a big fight here just giveing my opinion on the matter and of course when your opinion dose not match up with popular beliefe it dosen't take long for someone to attack you.  This will be my last post on this thread so if you want to throw some more insults my way to feed your own ego N3xgen nock your self out.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

I do not necessarily buy into the "theorys" that we all hear. I just simply look at the facts. More travel, more dumping and therefore more mess. That mess is what is messing with the oceans, in my opinion. Was not meaning to throw out anything to help start any arguements. Just giving my thoughts. Shaun

I wasn't calling YOU a "dirty oil dumper" just giving one example of something...and wasn't calling you ignorant either.  I was saying people who do things that have been proven to harm the earth (and oceans) are ignorant.  Peoples attitude is...if I can't see it, why worry about it?  If we saw the destruction we are doing to the oceans everyday on the way to work, I would bet a lot more would be done to change our ways.
I didn't say you had to believe everything you read, but facts are facts.  Didn't mean for you to think I was "attacking" you but WE are harming our planet, to think otherwise is just crazy.

Do you really not believe in global warming? hehe
I mean really, each person is an ambient heat unit, just think of 20 people in a 10'x10' room, ok now put 60 people in there, the temp will rise..
Until countries find ways to deal with population increase it doesn't matter what we do to save nature...

These studies are only based on the last 50-75years at best due to the data thta is avaliable. Do you thiink there was a time were the earth had any other drastic change over the period longer than our life span. If we see the shifts in a short amount of time, what do you think long term will hold? When looking at a Pendulum, it moves the fastest at the base of the arc, rather than at the ends. We might just be analyzing the information with too little data over a too short of a time span due to the lack of records of 'real' data. My next question, does anyone ever recall a global cooling event. Hmm, just something else to get our panties in a twist.

Skimming over this thread has made me notice a bit of a trend, that I think is typical with many "controversial" topics. People tend to think of the extremes on one end or the other. What I mean by this is we either look at research results as gospel, or complete conspiracy, when in reality, we should probably be looking somewhere in the middle ground. It is unrefutable that over the last 75-100 years humanity has been polluting the air and their environments far more than ever before. We have the industrial revolution to thank for that. Furthermore, the nature in which we pollute is not "natural" in such a way that we could/should expect the environment to cope. As a result, we are left with more waste than our surroundings know what to do with. If it makes it easier, since this is an aquarium forum after all, think of it like a fish tank with a sustainable bioload. Now all of the sudden your fish have industry pumping out product and burning fuel more and more daily. (obviously this is just an example). The system that was thriving before can no longer keep up with what it was keeping up before. It was simply not designed for it. I am a believer that many lab results are presented in such a way that only information that fits the original goals will be highlighted (notice I said "highlighted" and not simply "presented". This is nothing new and has probably been going on since before "science" was even a word. That said, it is just as ignorant to throw it all into the "it's all a bunch of BS" category as it is to say that the world will end in twenty years if we all don't go back to living in caves.

If mother earth decides to fire up one of her super volcanoes (one of which is in our own back yard and overdue to errupt), none of this will matter.

I completely agree, but there is little that can be done about this scenario.

I think we should stick to fish, corals, and water chemistry topics on this forum !!!!
