Not to step on anyone's toes, but what is wrong with talking about other topics? It is related to the hobby in some degree, after all? Plenty of forums restrict users from talking about anything BUT what the forum is about. One of the perks about this forum to me has always been that there isn't a huge restriction on this. It's nice to see what my peers think about important topics like this one.

I believe it's realted to the hobby also. I've had some people comment on my tank when they see it like........"why don't you just leave the stuff in the ocean" and things like that. Even though almost 100% of the stuff I have was never in the ocean.

I agree with Bela.  I like the unrestricted nature of the forum in the sense that we can express our own opinions about topics like this that are related to the core of what our hobby is about.  Keeping corals and fish are the core of our hobby, but we can't forget about where they originally called home (even if that was 20 years ago).  Now when it gets to name calling and accusations, that's where we have to draw a line and take a step back..but as long as it's kept respectful, there's no reason why we all can't express our opinions.  Who knows, your opinion might make others think about something a little differently and they may change how they feel about a topic....and another post might have the same impact on you.

I agree that the article is related to the hobby and I also agree that this forum is very open and unrestricted in its content. That can be a good thing... except I also think that there are many people who do not know how to disagree with someone else's opinion without resorting to trash-mouthing and name calling. The first page of this thread is evident of that. I'm certainly not afraid of controversial topics - the world is full of them - but opinions need to be shared with respect.

I fail to see where the trash talking and name calling took place. No matter. If I may make a suggestion... I suggest discussing it with the people doing the trash talking and name calling rather than suggesting that the topic not be discussed at all. That may be a bit more constructive.

I think we should stick to fish, corals, and water chemistry topics on this forum !!!!

I think that this is the exact discussion.  We all have a teeny tiny bit of the ocean in our living rooms.  We spend hours and hours and hours trying to keep this tiny bit of the ocean healthy...why would we not care that the actual ocean is becoming a garbage dump.  We freak out at the slightest change in our tanks but don't bother that sewers, garbage and whatever else are dumped into the ocean every single day.  Sometimes it's dismissed because of the vast quantity of water the ocean has.  Stuff dumped into the ocean, that builds up over years, contributes to the same thing as ignoring our tanks for months.
Before someone can say this is BS and not happening to coral reefs and the ocean, I would suggest you study the subject a little further ...with an open mind.  If someone isn't concerned about the ocean, they shouldn't have a reef tank in their home.

I wasen't going to post on this thread again but it is a far cry to say that because someone dosen't beleave that co2 is going to destroy the world that that same person dosen't beleave in polution! Of corse there is a insane amount of polution in our world and I don't like it anymore than anyone else but I don't think that you can say that the issues that they say are cause by excess co2 are fact. These studys are fare to small scale and only done over a small perod of time to prove anything. Then add in  the political factors involved in this issue and who knows what to beleave.
