I have decided to join GIRS and may look to become a supporting member.  I am a full time doctoral student and teaching assistant at the University of Iowa.  I have set up a 29 gallon Biocube.  I'm currently in the process of building the LED upgrade for it (complete DIY).  All I'm waiting for are the drivers, the LEDs (Cree RB and XM-L Cool White) and assembly are all put together, epoxied and soldered.  Also tested them all and they all test just fine, no shorts.
I also dabble in photography, so I'll throw some pictures of my tank inhabitants.

Here's an old shot of the tank... everything has more growth now (candy canes are in the process of making 5 heads out of 2, brain coral almost touches itself in the back, blasto completely covers plug, as you can see the the one shot above and the RBTA has grown as well... even under PC lighting).
This shot was taken with a cell phone, the others with T2i, 100mm f/2.8L Macro and a 580EXII flash.
I appreciate feedback as well as suggestions on other tank inhabitants I should look for.  I'm thinking about some acan lords.

Hey man, welcome to the club. I also do some hobby level photography, it would be great to have a side kick/bac k up for photographic club events. Whatta you shooting with? I hope you're planning on attending MACNA, it's a huge event it's going to include lectures and seminars from many oceanographers, researchers, aquarists, freelancers, and the like from the world of reef aquaria. GIRS is hosting it this year in Des Moines, which is huge, since this annual event has been for the most part relegated to the coastal areas for the last 23 years (with a few exceptions). Likely the next major event won't be till spring 2012, although there is some talk about fall fest 2011.

Bob, AJ, and I host a monthly meet to do some DIY projects, discuss and have mini lectures about issues facing practical applications to keeping reef aquariums, although I'd like to explore some more discussions on conservation and ecologically minded aspects of reef keeping as a hobby because I feel it's an important part of what we do. Let us know what you'd like to hear about, andy why don't you think about getting something bigger than the 29! lol I'm dreaming of a 265!!!

What class are you TA-ing for? I'm almost finished with my second bachelors degree and may be looking to go for post grad sooner or later. Cya round

Thanks. Still debating those acan lords. I just want to save up the little space I have for some really nice pieces instead of "just corals" if that makes sense. I really like the blasto merletti the best out of the corals, that's why it has its own entire rock.

Oh i see your cam specs now, 100mm macro gives you a lot of working distance, I wish my macro lens was more than 60mil sometimes, but other times I'm really glad it's not. I've got that lens, a 18-105mm f/2.8, a 70-300mm f/3.5, and a 60mm f/1.8. I really want a 200-500mm next now that I'm getting into bird watching!

I have a Cannon T2i, 70-200mm f/2.8L, 100mm f/2.8L Macro, 28-135 f/3.5 (used for the wide end of the spectrum), 580EXII has been getting used a bit more lately.  Been shooting in full manual mode for about a year now.
MACNA certainly sounds interesting.  I'm currently finishing up a DIY LED conversion for my Biocube 29 with PC lighting.  The whole LED set up (except the drivers) will fit inside the stock hood where the stock lights were housed and will utilize the stock fans to help cool the LEDs.  Overall 19 - 3W Crees, 11 of the Royal Blue XP-E and 8 of the Cool White XM-L epoxied to a heat sink I built out of different sized aluminum U-channel [IMG]
Quick cell phone picture of what it looks like from the back side.  They are all soldered and will be run in 2 series with 2 drivers.  I am just waiting on the drivers to come in and then it will be tank ready.  The entire project will cost me around $180 (~$100 for the LEDs, ~$70 for the drivers and $10 for the U-channel, I had everything else).
I am doing the Biocube 29 to learn the basics of reefing so when I'm done with the PhD (Science Ed) and get a house, I can have a 300+ gallon tank that is successful.  This year, I was a TA in Human Genetics, Principles of Biology II and Societal and Educational Applications of Biological Sciences.  When I'm done, I want to be a professor at a smaller liberal arts college.  Ideally, teaching Biology, Biochemistry (I have a BS in Biochemistry) and maybe some science education courses.  I have one semester of course work left before comps and dissertation.

Since you like birds... here are a couple handheld with the 70-200mm f/2.8L

I tend to really like the Macro lens... here's a tiny spider that was on my backdoor (handheld)

    Also handheld

I also dabble in lightbox photography... when I'm in the mood lol

I haven't been able to shoot as much as I like lately unfortunately.

HAHA yeah, I've been looking into building a light box lately too! Very cool LED set up by the way they look like a lot of fun to put together, and exceptionally nice and economical to use, I may go that way in the future but I'm still rockin my old radium 250's.

Is human genetics different from the course fundamental genetics? I took fundamental and molecular genetics a while back. I graduated with a BS in Environmental Hydrosci and working on a BS in Evolutionary Biology. I wonder if I've seen you around. I've always dreamed of professor life, taking 2 year sabatocals, having 3 months off from teaching every year to pursue my own experiments. Problem is, there's not much money going around for my research in my discrete field of interest, I'll end up doing most of my work from home as a hobby.

Look forward to chatting with you soon. BTW I failed to mention the best parts of MACNA, over 50k worth of raffle prizes and more than 200 vendors with all their best products, the banquet and alcohol! It's going to be a glorious time, hope your pockets are deep! lol

Very nice work, I'll have to share more of my stuff with you once, I renew my Flickr account, I also haven't had much time for photography lately, but I'm getting back to it the past couple of weeks.

    Cya,
    Andy

Human Genetics is an easier genetics course than Fundamental.  It's meant for non-science majors mostly.  I built my own box out of PVC and muslin... very easy.  The LED set up was rather easy, and I love working with my hands.  Plus, I'll get it all done for under $200.  It's amazing how it makes the corals pop.  I've been at Iowa since 2005.  BS in Biochemistry in 2008, MS in Science Ed with Biology emphasis in 2010, finish up my PhD classes this fall.
I'm not sure how deep a full time graduate student's pockets can be /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/tongue.gif

No doubt! haha, I'm blessed to be independently wealthy, although I have a tendency to pinch a penny pretty good! The one place I never skimp is on my reef tank though, because I feel like I have a responsibility to provide for these animals, many of them wild caught. I've been talking myself out of a new car for the last 4 years! Once I graduate and get some cash flow I'll probably break down and go for it!

My wife and I are making MACNA our summer "vacation," we usually go to new england to see her parents, uncles, grandparents etc. We get free lodging while we're out there but we still like to buy a place on Nantucket or Marthas Vinyard, or Block Island for a few nights, and ferry out to different islands, tours, museums, aquariums, memorials. I'm absolutely in love with new england! In any case, a few hundred bucks at MACNA is nothing compared to 2 weeks in new england, we're going to get by pretty cheap this summer!

How many hermits and snails do you have in there? I also have a 29 gal bio cube and feel like maybe I don't have enough. I have a few small snails which came in the tank. But I need to go buy some. I have 14 hermits that is if they are all still alive.

I ordered from reefcleaners... great guy. I have a whole host of snails in mine. No crabs of any kind. The only arthropod I have (that I put in the tank) is my fire shrimp. I'm hoping to get some pods (if I don't already have them), though I may start culturing them. I would really like a mandarin.

I just have my two clowns and a peppermint shirmp along with my hermits and a few little snails. I would love to get a fire shrimp too but they are much more costly then my little peppermint shirmp was!

They certainly are. I got mine for $34? from PetCo. I enjoy it, he has a lot of character... though I'd like for him to stop pestering the anemone.

There's a hell of a line up, and this website has all the specifics. There is a club price for MACNA too if you solidify your membership. Hope you can make it to the BBQ and tank tour June 11th!
