I have not been having much luck with my hermit crabs lately. I'm not sure if I have had some hostile takeovers or what is going on but they seem to be dropping like flies. I have had three die in the past week and have also lost two turbo snails. All of my water tests come out fine and my corals still seem happy. The tank has been fish free for a little over a month now but I'm still feeding it small amounts and there is plenty of algae. The tank has been running for about six months now. Any ideas???

Did you get the rock live or dead when you started up the tank? If it was live you may have got a hitchhiker that is picking them off.

My live rock is very much alive. Now that there aren't any fish in the tank I have noticed my bristle worm population explode, would they be doing this??

Has the tank you are using ever been dosed with copper or a copper based ich treatment?

Yea there might have been copper used in it and you are only seeing the effects now. Copper can be absorbed into the silicone seals on glass tanks, and later it leeches back into the water.

Wouldn't copper effect the corals too?

Not always. Some will never show any effect to copper. It is easy to test for copper, there is a kit. If you have tracable amounts then you can try that copper out stuff but I have no idea just how long it takes to get the copper out of the silacone. You may have to reseal the tank to get it all out, if that is the problem. I know that I had a gorrila crab that did nothing in my tank for a few months then just started reacking havoc on everything starting with my inverts. Shaun

I bought the tank brand new and have never used copper in it, I have even tested for it just to be sure. I do have a sea urchin in the tank, he wouldn't be killing everything would he?? I'm so frustrated at this point. I feel horrible for all of the little critters in my tank. The only things that have done well are the bristle worms and the urchin haha sigh.

I remember a thread somewhere on a large worm of sort that was picking off inverts. A mantis shrimp could also take out snails and hermits. Thats all I have for ideas right now. Unless you want to invest into a trap and throw a few hermits or snails in it and see if anything ends up in it.
