Hello to all and thanks for all the good info. I have been browsing the site for quite some time. I live in cedar falls iowa and I have recently switched gears from 200 gals fresh water to one twenty gal that i purchased used and established. I am in the process of switching it to my 40 long so i have included a few pics of my sump and diy surface skimmer so let me know what you see good or bad before its to late!
    thanks Andrew
ps sorry for the huge pics

Welcome to the club! My first question is why is the tank so far from the wall?

I am guessing that is just a water/pumps etc. test with fresh water. Make sure and double sure things are not leaking and everything is working right.

Welcome to GIRS!  Glad you joined us[IMG]  Thanks for sharing the pictures.  Can you tell us what you are planning...FOWLR, mixed reef, etc?  No need for the bioballs unless you just plan on having SW fish.  Again, welcome[IMG]

I am not really sure what to call my tank. I'll show you a picture then you can help decide
But i I had to leave the sump out for now. pump not working. I do have bio wheel and CPR skimmer pumping. I hope this will work until i can come up with new pump. Also need to find 2 power compact bulb 22 in 65 watt 1-10k and 1- actinic

Hey Andrew, welcome to the club. It's always great to see more members in the area!

I had a 55 gallon tank one time and I just used a couple Maxi-Jet 1200 powerheads for the return. If you've got a couple laying around, they will get the job done. You don't need a lot of flow going through the sump...

I've got a few return pumps at my place if you're interested. Let me know, you can stop by sometime, I'm also located in Cedar Falls.

yeah my roommates looked at me like i was crazy when I was building it they even bet me it would not work. I won. It does work I use a aqua lifter pump to start and keep my siphon. Problem used pump I bought went out first two days of running.
